Working for Tesco

Advantages: Good pay, great benefits package
Disadvantages: Crap uniform, crap managers

...actually interested in reading about Tesco as an employer, then I'd suggest you don't bother as it will take some patience to get through!

When I left school at the age of 18, and having decided I couldn't be bothered with university, I suddenly had to face the big bad world and go and find myself a job. I wasn't really fussy about what job I did - I've never been ambitious, and simply wanted a job where I could go to work, do my job, ...
...
As our local Tesco is just 5 minutes away, I decided to apply there. I wrote a letter requesting an application form, and a few days later received a lovely letter and the form I had asked for. I read through the form and thought, wow, I don't know how to answer these questions! Most of them seemed completely irrelevant, and needed to be based on experience of work, which I didn't have any of! Nevertheless, I filled in the form as best I ... more

Nice little earner

Advantages: good pay, easy work, great benefits, hours to suit you
Disadvantages: too many managers, bad equipment

...of you wage put into tesco shares which can be accessed anytime but are tax free after 5 years. After a year you receive free shares to a percentage of your wage, these are held for you for 5 years and then you can claim them tax free! There are many other benefits but I have no use for them as I will be leaving soon, the three above are considered the best benefits tesco's offers. Equipment For a multi-billion £ business I have found that tescos ...
...The cages are the worst, almost half of them don't move properly and we even get some without wheels so we have to transfer everything off and onto another which I thought should be done before it is loaded onto the lorry and brought here! Even the lorries seem to break down all the time, on 3 occasions in my 6 months a lorry has broken down and they haven't fixed it until 12 hours later. Another problem is the PDAs and printers for reductions, there ...

It was OK, I suppose.

Advantages: Best pay I've had, easy job, overtime opportunities.
Disadvantages: General inflexibility, restricting, tedious job, tight-fistedness.

...for a part-time job at Tesco - a large 24 hour store in Paulton, Bristol in June. Initially I was sent a letter through the post saying they had no places, but would get in touch if there were. A few weeks afterwards, I was invited to an interview, which I attended. This involved spending half an hour doing the job I was being interviewed for (you didn't generally have a choice of what you did - I wanted to go on checkouts and was dismayed to find ...
...bureaucracy really. Being taught the Tesco values and mottos and stuff - it all seemed pretty unnecessary to be honest, and as I suspected, I didn't need to use any of it during my time there. We were given the opportunity to join the trade union USDAW, which I did for £1:20 a week. I was given my hours - not as many as I would have liked, and certainly not at ideal times (I like my evenings thank you very much, ESPECIALLY my Friday evenings), but ...

Easy oppurtunities but not a long term prospect

Advantages: Staff Discount and Benefits
Disadvantages: Career Progression and Pay

...went on it became clear Tesco was changing, it started cutting overtime to allow for budgets and management were in and out from various levels after short periods. New entry managers were random and this lead to a backlash from staff who were easger for promotion and working towards a career. Various departments work at different pay rates and it became apparent who was earning certain rates and who were not. After making a beeline for the customer ...
...my job role. As Tesco began to evolve the store began to undergo further development to extend and enter into more non-foods. More jobs became available and staff moved internally where ever they could to obtain better pay. Tesco has its own internal managment scheme as well as graduate schemes, and if your department manager had the time and really pushed you forward your career was sorted, otherwise you just might as well sat back and go for ...

TESCO

Advantages: Friendlly people, easy job
Disadvantages: pay,staff benefits

Having worked for Tesco at some point I have an employee and also a customer's perspective. I was employed when I was 16; it started off as part time work because I was at college. This suited me because my hours were convenient, the pay was good - above the minimum wage, overtime was available at the drop of a hat and it was a really easy job. For a young person the training was a breeze - everything was easy to pick up and the local store where ...
...and of course SMILING. TESCO do monthly checks on you and mark you for how you interact with your customer, how you pack their bags - this is really easy to pass seeing as though the tester is stood right next to you, and how much does it cost for being polite to a customer - NOTHING. The uniform is free and personally I liked it - I liked the blue shirts and wearing my skirt, however the women's pants were very unflattering and made my bottom ...

work at morrisons if tescos aren't recruiting!

Advantages: errr....
Disadvantages: grab a brew and we'll have a chat...

i work at morrisons currently and it is by far the worst place i could imagine to be employed. senior management are surly and rude, but on bad days they are generally worse. the store is usually understaffed, the reason for which will become apparent soon after you commence work there... there is an air of superiority over the shop floor staff by some management and i cannot for the life of me work out why... i don't think they realise that some people are working at morrisons as it fits in with their current lifestyle. i would be ashamed to say that the sum total of my employment history had been within Wm Morrisons Plc but some of these people seem to be proud of that... it beggars belief. in summary. work at morrisons if tescos aren't recruiting just now... ...

Birmingham best

Advantages: Highly respected University; excellent student support
Disadvantages: Shops on campus are quite expensive

I studied Classics at the University of Birmingham from 1990 to 1998 as both an undergraduate and post-graduate, and I have to say that they were the best years I've lived so far. The campus offers everything a student would need - library, Guild of Students, banks, restaurants and cafes, book shops. However, as students at Birmingham are a captive audience, shops (Spar) tend to more expensive than Sainsburys and Tesco. For piece of mind, all 1st year Undergraduates are given University accommodation for the entire year at incredibly low prices. But you are not forgotten after that first year. The University offer the complete student support for housing - only approved landlords and accommodation are registered with them. Clubbing is a major event in the Guild, on a Saturday night. Enjoy an Eighties or Seventies night ...

The hell of Morrisons

Advantages: Easy to get a job, anyone can work there.
Disadvantages: Anyone can work there, looks bad on CV after a while, management, pay, company policies.....

the customers as an annoyance getting in their way, and many a dirty look and harsh word have been muttered from some of my co sufferers. Standards of cleanliness are questionable at best, with clouds of flies lurking behind the nice facade of fruit juices, or, as on more than one occasion, maggots festering behind the milk. As no one has the time to clean these things up, they often go unnoticed until the smell becomes unbearable. In addition, Morrisons stores seem to be a Mecca for shoplifters and eat before you pay cheapskates, so if you consider yourself a couple of notches above savage, I wouldn't recommend mixing with them. Working at Morrisons is akin to smoking. It's easier to just not start then it is to start and then stop. In short, try Tesco or somewhere else, both to shop or work. Realistically, they're all the same in essence; it ...
