While in Tesco I was wandering through the toiletries department and happened to spot the vast range of Sun Care products on display there. Last weekend the weather turned out to be glorious so it meant my children were able to play out in the garden for the first time this year without wearing thick winter coats and Wellington boots.
Because of the mini heatwave I wanted to ensure that both Gemma and Craig’s skin was protected from the sun, despite the temperatures lower than the summer months, but even on a cloudy day you can get sun burn so I checked to see if I had any left from our last holiday. A quick search in the medicine cabinet confirmed I had since run out so I decided to make a quick trip into town to pick up some supplies while I was doing the weekly shop.
Driving through the town centre I noticed there was a huge queue for the local carpark, which I needed for the local Boots store, so I thought I would head for Tesco first to get my groceries and nip back afterwards. While in Tesco I was wandering through the toiletries department and happened to spot the vast range of Sun Care products on display there. I hadn’t even thought about looking here before, so I decided to browse through hoping to save myself time without having to go to the Chemist.
I noticed that Tesco had their own brand of sun creams and I was pleased to see that the prices were very favourable and there were quite a few to choose from ranging from Factor 2 right up to Factor 60 meaning that there was something suitable for each family member.
I decided to plump for a 400ml bottle of Factor 25 Waterproof cream knowing that this would be sufficient for our climate providing a high level of protection for both my children. I paid just over £3 for this product which I found amazing considering that more famous brands command over 4 times this amount for their sun creams. The packaging is very similar to others on the market so again it’s not obvious that you have bought a ‘cheap’ product. The lotion I chose came in a bright sunny yellow bottle with a flip top lid which I prefer to those annoying lids that you have to unscrew all the time and trying to replace them when you have slippery hands is a nightmare. Bright red lettering is emblazoned across the front screaming out Tesco’s all to familiar logo and the product name itself. On the back is the usual blurb containing instructions on use and a heaving list of ingredients that make stark reading as they are all in scientific names. I won’t bore you with the details.
I deliberately chose the waterproof variety, as I know that my children are water babies and there’s nothing they like more than splashing about outside. So I wanted a skin protection that would look after their skin when they were in the water. Tesco Kids Sun Protection comes with the promise that the waterproof cream works even after two 20 minute swims so this was very reassuring.
Once I returned home the sun was quite intense so I decided to use the cream straight away, particularly on Craig as he is only 18 months old and still has highly sensitive skin. Opening the fliptop cap on the bottle I was met with the gorgeous aroma of coconut, which was already conjuring up images of a faraway tropical island bathing in sunshine. I dabbed a bit of the white cream on my finger and was amazed at the thickness of it. It wasn’t at all runny which I thought it would be at its price, it had a nice consistency, which meant that when applying it I wouldn’t lose half on the ground.
As I rubbed the cream into my hand, it dried in nicely and didn’t leave a horrible greasy layer, although my skin did have a nice sheen to it. It felt really soft and smooth and the scent of coconut seemed to linger for ages after application. And the good thing is that because the lotion soaked into the skin well it didn't run into my children's eyes as they got wet in the water.
Although it was thicker than I had imagined, it wasn’t as thick as some creams on the market, which I’m not too keen on as they seem to take forever to rub into the skin and I had a bad experience once when I used Sun block on Gemma one year, so haven’t used it since.
As well as the Waterproof Sun cream there are others to choose from in the Tesco kids range. For children that don’t enjoy the task of having sun cream applied then there is the Kids Green Spray, which comes in a trigger spray bottle, and as the name suggests it comes out green onto the skin, but as it dries it becomes clear. Also available is Tesco Kids Sparkling Gel After Sun designed with children in mind. Instead of plain white lotion it is more of a clear gel with sparkly bits dotted throughout again making the whole mundane process of applying these creams to your children more fun and bearable. All the products in the Tesco Kids Suncare range are priced between £2.64 to about £4 so they are excellent value for money.
There are sun blocks available, which have a higher factor of 50 plus, but I don’t like these as they don’t soak into the skin and after using this on Gemma a couple of times in the past I have ruined her clothes as it wouldn’t wash out. Not an ideal balance as to double up her protection in the height of summer I like to make sure she is well covered with a t-shirt.
One year when we were on holiday a particularly nasty holidaymaker started shouting at me in what I took to be German “camomile” and I was “bad mother”. Obviously she had mistaken the sun block as camomile lotion and that I had used it on Gemma’s skin after she had burnt in the sun. Knowing I was never going to win the argument I walked off, but it was quite distressing none the less.
Tesco Kids Protection creams are all hypoallergenic which mean that they do not irritate young skin that has been introduced to the sun’s rays. Also each one is moisturising as they contain Vitamin E, which works at keeping your child’s skin smooth, soft and hydrated. And a big plus for animal lovers, Tesco Sun Protection has not been tested on animals.
I must stress however, that it is very important that you take other precautions when you let your children play in the sun. Sun cream while it can protect skin well, should never be taken for granted and you should ensure that you re-apply it frequently. Also watch that your children don’t play in direct sunlight for too long as they can still burn despite wearing sun cream, try and keep them in the shade wherever possible and if this can’t be done cover their head and shoulders particularly when the sun is at its highest. Following these guidelines should ensure that your child will still have fun in the sun and there won’t be any tears early in the evening when their skin is sore and red from over-exposure.
Having tried this sun cream, I have now ditched my old brand, which I must admit I was happy with, but the price was astronomical. Despite the low price of Tesco’s own range, it is still very high quality and doesn’t have any appearance of being cheap like other budget brands I’ve tried in the past. I can safely say that when we go on our summer holiday this year Tesco Kids Protection will be coming with us too and will be a welcome guest.
Advantages: Great for my sons skin who had infantile eczema Disadvantages: Reapplies quite a lot
...Tesco.
I bought the Tesco sun protection baby, factor 40 and have never looked back.
It advertises on its very simple white tube that it is/has:-
Ultra UVA protection
Hypoallergenic
Fragrance free
Extra water resistant (although it does say you should reapply after bathing)
Visible when applied
Dermatalogically tested
It is recommended on infants from 6 months and older. Also it states it should be applied 15 minutes before sun exposure ... ...1-2 hours and after bathing. As it is visible on application it is easy to get the total coverage recommended (it is visible white..which does tend to leave a white sheen but that is handy because when that fades you know to reapply)
My son never had any problems with his skin through this product and that was my biggest concern. I have used it for two summers now and have just bought a new tube for this summer.
I do think though that by the time ...

Tesco Kids Range Sun Lotion.
When we went looking to buy some sun lotion for the kids this year we decided to have a look at Tescos own brand as we are fed up of these big brand names with high prices. (This isnt a good thing when the baby wants to spray her self all the time with a bottle of lotion which cost about £10.00 plus a time.)
Tesco had very little to choose from on their shelfs but the lotions that they did have met my standerds so I ... ...summer has only just begun and I would recomend to all the people out there that are looking for a bargain to get down to tesco and look for this sun lotion. Overall, this is a worthwhile product, and one of the best for value on the market. ...

Advantages: Prevents burning, reduces likelihood of skin cancer Disadvantages: None that I can think of
Following an argument with my neighbours who managed to get my 7mth old daughter burnt I decided to change sunscreen. The main reason being that my other one sunk in completely to the skin and I wanted to be able to tell that she was wearing it (neighbours tried to convince me that she miraculously got burnt whilst wearing sunscreen, her sunhat, sat in the shade with the suncover down on the pram!)
Whilst doing my shopping I picked up a tube of ... ...were hitting the £8-£10 mark.
It is a thick white factor 40 cream, it has no discernible smell. It comes in a fliptop tube and is very easy to apply despite being thick it does spread easy.
It leaves a thin residue which is visible so for me this was a good thing but not everyone will feel the same way about this. It isn't as visible as the ones from the days when my mum used to smoother me in cream though, it kind of gives Anna a pale faced sheen ...

Advantages: works and is cheap Disadvantages: very thick
Tesco's sun tan lotions for kids are an excellent product which are reliable and very affordable. Having got pale skin that burns rather than tans I wanted the best protection for my toddler. Most childrens sun lotions appeared to go upto factor 35 and no more and were extremely expensive. However whilest in my local branch of Tesco's I came across where own range of sun creams for kids. I bought a tube of the factor 50 as I was going abroad and ... ...the only other factor50 I had seen was nearly 3 times the price. It work extremeley well. I have only one gripe about it - its like spreading lard! but is great for using on areas like the neck and shoulders. I would also recommend the lower factors as well. nb you will notice I've put factor 30 on the bit below this was a review of factor 50 the choices only went up to 30 ...

Advantages: Good and works but so bad for their skin Disadvantages: bad for their skin
I have a real problem now that the our belated Summer holiday is upon us again I have always bought Tesco's suncream because it's cheap and does the job very well but it is very bad for little ones skin because the higher the factor the more it blocks up their pores, which in turn can cause really bad skin complaints. Now Tescos do indeed do a great suncream both for kids and adults and I have always bought it since last summer when my little girl ... ...the sun and washing off the cream in a bucket of water tescos version stays on just as well as these that claim to be waterproof. But like i say now we have a problem do we wrap her up to the neck and put a hat on, where she may overheat, or face giving her possible skin complaints. I think we will try and keep her in the shade at all times even if this may cause ructions as I don't fancy another 5 hours in casualty,i will still buy Tescos sun cream ...
