...I'd write a review on Tesco's New Potatoes.
THE PRODUCT
I paid 42p for a 567g can but they are also available in smaller 300g cans for 23p. The product inside the can consists of New Potatoes in salted water.

They are packaged in a round can which has a Sky Blue label on it and there are lots of pictures of New Potatoes on the front so they are easy to spot on the shelf.
THE REVIEW
On opening the can the first thing that I noticed was that all of the New Potatoes inside were whole, yet despite this they were all reasonably large in size as they were packed quite tight into the can.
I used to belong to the school of thought that believed that canned Vegetables were for lazy people, lacking in taste and vitamins, but those were the good old days when my Mum always had my dinner ready on the table for when I got home from work. These days I have to fend for myself quite a lot and after a 12 hour shift the convenience of tinned and packet foods often outweighs fresh produce.
During my last trip to Tesco I knew that cooking time would be sparse the following week so I stocked up on Tinned Potatoes, Carrots and Peas, (I only hope that my Mother hasn't suddenly discovered the Internet and become a member of Ciao and reads this). Anyway now that I've eaten unhealthily for the last couple of days I thought I'd write a review on Tesco's New Potatoes.
THE PRODUCT
I paid 42p for a 567g can but they are also available in smaller 300g cans for 23p. The product inside the can consists of New Potatoes in salted water.
These potatoes come in steel can, which is made from recyclable steel for those of you who like to be environmentally friendly, but there's no fancy ring pull on this can so you'll need to have a tin opener to hand if you want to enjoy the contents.
Tipping them into a pan I counted a dozen Potatoes each a good two to three inches long in length. Each Potato was pale white in colour and still in its skin. I was pleased to find that their skins were intact as my Dad had always instilled into me that this was where most of the goodness and nutrients were to be found.
Anyway cooking these things couldn't be easier, you simply heat them up in a saucepan for about five minutes and then they are ready to serve straight onto your plate. There are no skins to scrub or peel as these little things are already washed and prepared for you.
Once these Potatoes have been cooked they maintain their firmness and don't fall into pieces like some other canned Vegetables I have tried and slicing them in half they look nice and clean and crisp. Putting them into my mouth I am immediately impressed with the taste as they are full of flavour and they are cooked to perfection so they almost melt in your mouth.
OK I know that tinned Potatoes in any form are not the tastiest thing in the world, and thefore saying that the taste of these is somewhat bland is not a derogative statement in any way but there is actually something quite fresh about the taste of these. However don't expect them to taste earthy like fresh new Potatoes that have just been pulled from out of the ground because they don't.
I usually like to put a blob of Margarine on these canned Potatoes to add to the flavour but you can add Mint sauce or anything else that you would normally add to fresh New Potatoes.
THE NUTRITIONAL INFORMATION
Since there are no additives these Potatoes are quite good for you and when drained 100g of this product contains the following:
Calories - 62 Protein - 1.5g Carbohydrates - 13.8g (of which 0.7g are sugars) Fat - 0.1g Fibre - 0.8g Sodium - 0.3g
This product is suitable for Vegetarians.
OTHER INFORMATION
As with all canned Vegetables these things have a long use by date when unopened, my can was best before July 2007 and they are very easy to store for those occasions when you run out of fresh Potatoes and can't be bothered venturing out to the shops. They are also a source of New Potatoes throughout the year, even when fresh New Potatoes are not in season.
This product once heated is best eaten straight away but once cooked they can be transferred to a non metallic container and refrigerated, if this is done they should then be consumed within a couple of days.
CONCLUSION
I actually really like the taste of these and find them both convenient and excellent value for money. I am however under no illusions that these are anything like the real thing but there will always be a place in my cupboard for these for those lazy moments.
Advantages: cheap, nice in emergency Disadvantages: fake feeling and tasting
Since they say veg in tins is meant to be just as healthy, and since I never eat 2kgs of spuds in a week, I thought I would try these.
Now the tins I tried, I tried the tesco versions and the value versions. Both were the same so the review could be for either.
The value potatoes cost 15p for 400g in salt water. Now, although the water has salt in, draining and rinsing the spuds takes most of this away without worry. On the whole, the tin usually ... ...if you pick a wrong one you could end up with as little as 3 big potatoes in there ( and by big, I mean small compared to normal potato), so one tin may not feed as many as you would like. Luck of the draw.
The potatoes are already peeled. Not good if like me you like the skin on. They boil just like spuds do, but thats where the connection ends.
Real spuds in a pan boiled, keep some sort of 'real' quality to them. These canned varieties are already ...

I usually use it on chicken, but have also used it on pork which tastes fantastic.
I usually serve it with potato wedges or newpotatoes.

I paid 98p for a tin at Tesco. There is also another version available in a jar, which is not quite so thick as the tinned version. This costs around £1.40 but has a slightly different taste to it.
MY OPINION

I love this sauce. It is easy to use and can be used for a quick meal or a slow cook. It enhances the meat without drowning the flavour of the meat.
It is cheap to buy and quite often the supermarkets will have it on offer.
This sauce is low in fat and very tasty ...
