♥The Story ♥ =========
Joyce Conway's marriage has broken down and she has just lost her baby and as a result, had to have a blood transfusion. Suddenly, Joyce has all this knowledge that she never had before - she can talk about Italian and Irish architecture, she can speak different languages, has gone from a vegetarian to a meat lover and can quote Latin phrases. Most of all, she appears to have acquired someone else's memories.
There is also Justin Hitchcock. An American, he moves to London to be near his teenage daughter. Guest lecturing in Dublin, he finds himself giving blood after being persuaded by a pretty doctor.
These two people, upon a coincidental meeting at a salon, realise they have some kind of connection, and are unable to figure out why. We follow Justin and Joyce as they try to work out their weird sense of déjà vu...
♥My Thoughts♥ ==========
Ok so you have read the summary of the book and it quite obviously reads as unbelievable and quite frankly, a bit contrived. However, there have been some cases where people have reported similar stories due to transfusions which is where I assume Ahern got her idea from. However, it is still a little far-fetched, Joyce seems to have acquired nearly all of Justin's personal memories, knows his name, and names of the members of his family.
I have to say though, that by the time I realised that it all seems a little too unbelievable, I was past caring, I had become totally engrossed in the story. So what that this was a bit to unbelievable? For once it was nice to suspend common sense and go with it and be caught up in the magic of it all! After all, in my opinion reading is about escapism from everyday life, and you expect some smiles and warm feelings from a book in this genre!
I found that the lead characters were truly engaging. I sympathised with Joyce and Justin was equally likeable and charming but, like many other reviews I have read, the true star seemed to be Joyce's elderly father who provided a comedy element to the story (even if some of gags and stories were a bit ridiculous!) He was extremely endearing, sweet natured, forgetful and completely loveable.
"Thanks for the Memories" always managed to make me want more and for the first time in a couple of months I began looking forward to when I could sit alone on the bus/in the bath/in bed and read what happened next. They were always so close to meeting or so close to revealing why they felt what they felt that it became addictive to read the next chapter, it was all so tantalizing! This rather surprised me, as this is not the type of genre that usually has this reaction on me plus after reading "P.S I love You" I wasn't too impressed with the author either.
In fact, if you have read P.S I Love You and you liked it, or even if you haven't read it yet, I would recommend reading this one as in my opinion it is much better. The characters are more interesting the romantic element is unique (if a little out there!) there is humour to the story and its easy reading. I really did enjoy this from beginning to end, and after reading that, I would in fact read another book by this author.
Advantages: A story that may remind us of people we know. Disadvantages: May upset people who have lost a baby.
Close your eyes and stare in the dark was the advice Joyce's Dad used to give her when she was a child and couldn't sleep. He said those same words many years later.
Bereavement, friendship, families, love are all covered in this delightful book, mostly set in Ireland.
The main characters include Professor Justin Hitchcock, from America but working in London who is afraid of needles and is now divorced and lonely.
Dr Sarah Fields, who works for ... ...anything about blood donations you’ll learn a little in a light hearted way!
Bea – Justin’s daughter who is at Ballet school. Al, his brother and Doris who is Al’s wife. Bea’s mother and her new partner make an appearace too.
Joyce – who is the main character starts off in hospital, the reason why will be revealed as you read the book. Her life is turned upside down and things happen she can’t explain, she has an over whelming sense of déjá vu. ...

Advantages: likeable characters, easy to read Disadvantages: ending seemed rushed
After reading ‘Where Rainbows End’ by Cecelia Ahern, and absolutely loving it, I was keen to read her novel ‘Thanks for the memories’ which I had bought at the same time.
~The Story~
Justin Hitchcock is an expert on art and architecture. He’s an American living in London, but on a trip to Dublin where he visits once a month to give lectures, he is confronted by an attractive young doctor, who is encouraging the students to donate blood. Justin ... ...he has been attracted to since his divorce and so reluctantly agrees. He is keen to know who will receive his blood, but as the doctor explains, there is no way that a donor can trace where it has gone.
Joyce Conway wakes up in hospital and is told she has had a huge blood transfusion after losing her unborn child. She doesn’t think too much about this, the pain of losing the child she had wanted for six long years numbing her thoughts. In the days ...

Advantages: A good read with excellent characters. Disadvantages: Cannot think of any.
I have previously only read one Cecelia Ahearn book, P.S. I Love You, so when I saw this one on the shelf of my local library, I thought I would give it a try.
The book begins with a prologue, which introduces the reader to Joyce, the main character. The chapters then follow one month on from the prologue, and run in sequence, up to chapter 43, and the last chapter ends a month after the second last chapter, just as the first chapter started a month ... ...pages, to longer, but don't take long to get through.
Joyce has gone through some trauma in her life, which resulted in her receiving a blood transfusion. Justin is an American who works in Ireland and London. He is scared of needles but gives blood after being coerced into it by Sarah, a doctor who is speaking to students that he is due to give a lecture to. He is also trying to impress her.
After the blood transfusion, Joyce begins to experience ...

Advantages: Characters are real and very believable Disadvantages: I would like the ending to have been longer to see how relationships grew.
This was a great read. Easy to follow, but fantastic story. Basically the main character is a married woman(Joyce) who after year of trying for a baby with the husband has an accident while pregnant and sadly loses the baby. This brings her to end her marriage and move in with her elderly father. Her father lost his wife and has never really got over it and we see the father/ daughter relationship grow partly due to this and due to the fun escapades ... ...the story.
As the story unravels we see Joyce have a "special" connection with a complete stranger after she recieves his blood during a transfusion after her accident. This is slighty odd at first but as the story flips between the two it starts to make sense and I felt a genuine interest to see how this developed. The story is very romantic and it is truely touching to see Joyce and her father relationship grow as the book goes on. As Joyce regains ...

Advantages: Hearing the 'authentic' Irish Accent; the abridging makes the story less meandering Disadvantages: Some of the incidental plot nuances are lost in the abridging; have to change discs.
so I could listen to the book all over again.

Like "Thanks for the Memories" (also by CeceliaAhern) it was abridged by Kati Nichol for this HarperCollinsAudioBooks version. It is read by (Clare-born) Aoife McMahon and (Dublin-born) Aiden McArdle and Production and Music were done by Peter Rinne.
Amazon's Super Saver Delivery was Remarkably Quick for Once
I was shocked when I discovered that the ABRIDGED version of the book had an approximate listening time of 6 1/2 hours on 5 CDs, as I'm sure it didn't take me that long to read the book in the first place . . . I knew I read quickly (particularly when it is on an off-white page), but I hadn't realised it was THAT quick.

Advantages: Fantastic read - loved the letters Disadvantages: Tearjerker... lots of tissues necessary
substance than books like the Shopaholic series by Sophie Kinsella. I believe what makes the book a success is that it had the perfect balance of joy and sorrow throughout the book. It wasn't so sad that you didn't want to endure anymore once getting half-way through the book like a few I have read recently.
I can't quite work out what it is that I think is missing from the book. Maybe it is for the reason that there wasn't enough going on in it. I'm not disputing that it was well written, but without any amazing plot.

Advantages: interesting, well written, like a grown up fairytale Disadvantages: none
I have started reading approximately five or six different books in the last month and just not been able to 'get into' any of them. Yesterday I wandered into a charity shop and saw two CeceliaAhern books I hadn't yet read. I'd already read 'Thanks for the memories' and 'Where Rainbows End' and really liked both as well as finding them both incredibly easy to read, so although I hadn't planned on buying any more books, I bought them.
I started with 'A Place called Here' as I had already read the blurb on Amazon and it sounded really intriguing.
~The Plot~
The story focuses on Sandy Shortt, a woman who runs a missing persons agency. She has had a fixation with missing things and missing people since she was 10 years old and a girl at her school, Jenny-May Butler went missing. A huge hunt was launched and Jenny-May's picture ...
