Tom Sawyer
In the novel 'The Adventures of Tom Sawyer', the writer, Mark Twain, uses various techniques such as alliteration, onomatopoeia and wordplay to describe Tom's venture from childhood to adulthood and also the setting and characterisation.
The novel Tom Sawyer is set in Missouri, Mississippi,1849, the home town of Mark Twain the writer and is situated within the depths of the shabby little village of St. Petersburg. The writer tells of growing up within Southern America in Missouri and also illustrates the difficulties of living there. Tom is a immature 12 year-old boy who is always acting childlike by playing hooky and repeatedly tormenting his Aunt Polly. For example:"Y-o-u-u Tom!". This illustrates the anger from his Aunt Polly as she hunts high and low for him. As the story progresses, Tom realizes that he is growing up and starts to act more maturely. Mark Twain also uses structure to piece together all the different aspects of Tom's life.
There are many issues witnessed in the novel of Tom Sawyer and the writer uses various techniques to back this up. When Tom and Huck sneak into the graveyard, there is alot of conflict between Injun Joe and Dr. Robinson as they witness Injun Joe killing the Doctor. This is a big theme within the novel and there are alot of quotes in the novel to prove this:"The Injun blood ain't in me for nothing. And now I've got you, and you got to settle, you know!" This shows the conflict between Injun Joe and the doctor immediately before Joe kills him. Then, when Tom finds out about the murder, he tells Aunt Polly then shares his experiences with the courtroom where Injun Joe is on trial. Also another main theme is when Tom and Becky are trapped in the cave as it shows passion and maturity:"He sat down by her and his arms around her; she buried her face in his blossom." Tom, here is comforting Becky as he feels that she is very sad and lonely. Another main theme in the story is when Injun Joe is on trial and Tom has to confess to the courtroom that it was Joe who killed the doctor:"Injun Joe jumped with the knife and. . ." Tom displays a great deal of courage here.
Mark Twain describes Mississippi, 1849 as a very troublesome place:"in the poor little village of St. Petersburg." This shows that the writer has no respect for the town and that he thinks it is very burdened. Tom Sawyer is set in a time when teachers and adults were in charge of children. When the children went to school in their bare feet and when they didn't have electronic gadgets to amuse them. When the people in Missouri talked in an extremely slang way. Tom creates adventures himself to keep him amused throughout the novel. This story also tells of the kind of life the writer had and what kind of dilemmas he had to go through.
Tom is a clumsy boy who is always causing trouble, pestering and annoying adults. As the novel progresses, Tom realizes that he is growing up and the writer takes this into account more and more often. One chapter involves Tom and Becky sneaking into Mr Dobbins room and ripping his book. When they are questioned as to who ripped it, Tom confesses that it was him:"I done it!" This shows that Tom is growing up and is taking more responsibility for his actions. Afterwards, Becky is so pleased with what Tom had done, that she falls in love with him. Aso, in the courtroom, Tom is on trial to tell the whole court who killed the doctor. After much thought, Tom stands up, knowing how dangerous Injun Joe is and tells the court that Injun Joe killed him:"And as the doctor fetched the board round and Muff Potter fell, Injun Joe jumped with the knife and. . .!"This shows that even though Tom knows Injun Joe will probably beat him up, he still tells the court the truth. At the end of the novel, Tom and Becky are trapped in the cave and Becky is scared so she starts to cry:"He sat down by her and put his arms around her." This illustrates to the reader that Tom is starting to learn how to cope with peoples emotions. All of these quotes are just some of the examples of maturity in Tom's part.
Symbols in the novel are very important because they help illustrate the concept of the novel and how it has to be passed across. Becky plays an important roll in Tom's life as she influences him and shares secrets with him. In chapter seven, Tom talks to Becky about getting engaged:" Becky I - I don't care for anybody but you." Tom cares for Becky here and he knows she will always be a part of his life. Objects such as the knife of Potter and the book which Becky ripped, all play a part in the novel, and assist the structure and idea of the novel. The writer uses strong and powerful language as he tells of the symbols which affect Tom.
I think the writer, Mark Twain has used very responsive and opinionated language to illustrate Tom's journey from boyhood to adulthood. When I noticed this particular book sitting on my shelf gathering dust, I thought to myself 'wouldn't this be a good book to read'. And I was right. This is one of the most enjoyable novels I have ever read!
...excitement, interest and action throughout the whole story. There is never a dull moment and I was totally enraptured from beginning to end. The adventures star Tom as a young boy in the deep south in America and his experiences with a young black boy, who is a slave. This does not sound very interesting, but in fact, there are so many aspects to the story that they cannot all be explained adequately. It is a story of a boy growing up, experiencing ...

In the novel "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer" the writer, Mark Twain uses a verity of different techniques to chart the main character, Tom sawyers change from boyhood to maturity in the novel. Techniques such as, setting, characterisation, themes and symbolism are important elements that Twain uses.
"The Adventures of Tom Sawyer" is about a young boy who is always getting up to no good. We know this because it reads, "inspired by the splendour of his own act, he took without an outcry the most merciless flogging that eve Mr Dobbings had ever administered." The word flogging refers to a "whipping" which suggests that the story was set a long time ago as whippings were banned from schools a while back. "He had shoes on, and yet it was only Friday," this ...

This book is one of the most memorable books I have read as a child. Keep in mind that I read it translated into Russian so I might have missed out on some language details, but esssentially the plot and everything else stays the same.

He is the black sheep of the family; always getting into mischief, hating his "perfect" brother and friends with the boy your parents tell you not to go near. Throughout the novel the beliefs of the time run rampant - supersticion and religion are everywhere. These themes are one ...
