The Amber Spyglass by Phillip Pullman is a fantastic fantasy novel on its own, and a great end to the His Dark Material trilogy - a feat that's quite extraordinary given the brilliance of its predecessors.

The story continues directly after the cliffhanger of The Subtle Knife and chronicles Will and Lyra's journey to deliver the Subtle Knife to Lord Asriel and aid in his war against the Church.
The novel includes the return appearances of some characters from past novel, and a number of new ones that you will care for by the end for sure.

What might be disappointing for some is how some issues raised through the series aren't really addressed properly - most prominently the mystery of Dust is featured and explained deeper but not solved; apparently that is to be the aim of Pullman's future installment 'The Book About Dust'.

Regardless the novel explores a variety of spiritual and metaphysical subjects, which would be interesting for adults but perhaps not so much for younger readers.

Another issue that some might have with their children reading the novel is how it quite maliciously attacks religious principles and beliefs - as is the case with the previous novels in the series - but by no means should this be a reason to deny one's children of the joys of this spectacular story.

All in all an easily recommendable novel for fantasy fans that, despite its heavy nature and subject matter, manages to avoid being overtly inaccessible or oblique and thus making it great for younger readers also.
