If you love medieval adventures and wonderfully researched backgrounds, then this is the book for you. Candace Robb has recreated a world of drudgery and fear, peopled with the great and the obscure whose only recourse is to hope and the mother church.
I had often wondered what happened to a thirteenth century war veteran, injured in the cause of his lord (it pre-dates the Chelsea Pensioners somewhat!). A very interesting idea to turn him into a spy, a captain of guards and ultimately a detective.
I thoroughly enjoy walking the streets of York, looking for the sites of the apothecary and taverns. A time machine for those that wish to travel back, complete with the woes of the common folk.
A great start to a series, Owen Archer is definitely a man to follow!
