Bachman was a name Stephen King used for a while to write stories that were not your run of the mill horror, he was found out by a journalist who spotted his name on some copywrite documents and then stopped using it. As a King fan I was looking forward to reading this book, which is a compilation of four stories written under his pseudonym, and I was not dissapointed. As I said, these are not your usual horrors, dealing instead with a more psychological thriller aspect. The first story is Rage, the story of a student on the brink of insanity, who takes a classroom of students hostage. Brilliantly written, it has you wondering all the way through whats going to happen next, kept me gripped. Then there is The Long Walk, a fascinating story about a contest where 100 young men quite literally walk until only one is left alive, sound boring? It isn't!! The interaction between the contestants as they go along is stunning and had me close to tears at points. Roadworks is the story of a man, Bart Dawes, slowly going insane as he deals with his family home and his neighbourhood being bulldozed to make way for a new motorway. Out of the four stories I did find this one quite hard work, but worth sticking with. Then there is Running Man, the story of a down on his luck guy trying to save his sick daughter by entering a competition where he is basically bait for people known as "The Hunters". If he wins he will get $1 Billion, and if he looses....death. An amazing story with a brilliant ending. All in all this book is absolutely worth a read, and will delight King fans.
(Note - this is not an audio book, I read the softback version)
