The Beast House is the sequel to The Cellar, and is a sequel in the truest sense - it continues the story of the original, rather than just being a rehash to cash in on the first book's success. It's difficult to describe the plot without giving away the ending of The Cellar, but it involves another group of people's encounter with the Beast House at Malcasa Point. Laymon has clearly made an effort to make this novel dovetail with the first, and he succeeds well, for example making one of the stars of The Beast House a friend of an apparently incidental character who dies at the beginning of The Cellar. This gives the novel a feeling of being an ongoing story, rather than a seperate book. If you liked The Cellar, then this is a must read.
Advantages: There are 3 books Disadvantages: Not long enough
The Beast House is a fantastic sequal to The Cellar and a brilliant prequal to the Midnight Tour. I had not realised that there was a trilogy to the "Beast story" and I did not read them in order. I thought each was a compelling read in it's own right. Not wanting to give away too much of the story, The Cellar follows the story of a Beast which seems to inhabit Malcassa Point. There are twists and turns in the plot which kept me reading long into ... ...a horror! The Beast kills in the Beast House, an old house where the beast first killed which has been turned into a tourist attraction. For all Laymon fans it is definately a must. After I had finished The Cellar I had to run out and buy the other two books in the trilogy. Definately not one to ponder over in the book shop. ...

mention what the beast actually is. Read if you dare.
The Cellar (1980) by RichardLaymon is the first of a series entitled BeastHouse Chronicles and was also his first novel to be published.

story. This serves only to heighten the tension if he does it at a time when you are not expecting it or if you desperately need to find out what has happened to a character.
The ending of the novel is superb, one of the best that I have seen, not only counting Laymon but many authors. The surprise arrival of one character and the true identity of another are great shocks, as are the final two chapters. ‘The BeastHouse’ is amazing and RichardLaymon has pulled off a masterpiece.
The only drawback to this superb novel is that I cannot see where he can go from here. True, there are a lot of loose ends left at the end of the book and Laymon does not explain a lot of them, but he cannot make these into a new book, as I know that I would not visit the BeastHouse if it really did exist.
Apart from this minor drawback, I ...
A nice gripping and readable novel ; A terrific tale of survival ; Very atmospheric ; The characters thoughts and feelings are projected well to the reader
Suddenly stops flowing towards the middle ; King can be slightly over obsequious towards the main character (*)
The writing is taut and effecive, and several stand alone scenes are magnificent. The conclusion, had it been published as a stand alone novella, would have been wonderful.
Nothing happens, and there is some nasty use of forced incest as a means to create a tawdry shock. Oh, and nothing happens. (*)
