Hunter Davies is one of the most well-known and respected sports writersin the country. His most famous work, The Glory Game", is a footballing classic still in print some 30 years...
more...since its original publication. Hunter is also a successful novelist and distinguished biographer, whose subjects include The Beatles, Dwight Yorke and Paul Gascoigne. Now, though,he describeshis own extraordinary life, from growing up on a Carlisle council estate in the 1950s and his student days at Durham to his introduction to Fleet Street, his enduringobsession with football and memorabilia, and the many fascinating characters he has met, interviewedand written about over the last 40 years. It is also the intimate portrait of his marriage toteenage sweetheart Margaret Forster, herself a well-known novelist. Full of wonderful observations, warm humour and colourful anecdote - a memoir to treasure.

When I was first given this book as a present my heart sank. I am not much of a football fan and the Beatles never lit my fire. So I reluctantly started to read it. Once I started I was hooked. It is Hunter Davies autobiography and although they are an important and integral part of his life neither the Beatles or football monopolise the book. Covering his life starting of in Scotland and moving to the North East and then how he became a journalist author and eventually becoming the only person ever to write an official biography about the Fab 4.
This book is both entertaining and informative. I must admit that the chapter covering the rape of his daughter in Africa left me feeling drained but on the whole it is well worth reading.
