This book is something you should treasure in your knowledge. Full of quirks and moments of complete resignation in poetic, beautiful language that entwines all that life really is.
Plath begins with her everyday life although she is away on a trip this time with a few other prize winners. You may think at first she is a bitter cynic by some of her views but these are beaten out of the picture by the enfoldings of the story.
The book is a run through of her degeneration in attitude and mind to show the inside of the tragic tale that ended in her her real life death. The build of emotion in her comes across as a dull, numb ache constantly throbbing away at her mind as it slowly erodes the hope that is left in her. Fatigued and after having given in she is put into psychiatrists wards and homes but nothing seems to work for her.
Her style shows the poetic genius that lies behind the book with moments of description that fill the reader with admiration. She does not tend to stretch to language that will have you constantly reaching for the dictionary but it is of a variety that is complex enough for the task she wants to fulfill.
The degeneration is of mind and she leaves the reading with a feeling that she is as pure as she wants to be and that she is what she wants to be. The book is involving and beautiful. You have to read to understand.
It is as far as I am aware fiction book although feel free to correct me if I am wrong.
Her views on life are so articulate i her manner and her ability to distill situations and actions down to what she interprets them are are a superb skill to have. The language she uses builds a picture that you could almost taste it so tangible.

Not much of a book worm myself - don't seem to find enough time to read that much . A decent attempt at dedescribing a book - literature on literature isn't easy . Keep on ciao'ing.

Advantages: A very well witten novel, easy to understand but not simplisic Disadvantages: A shame Plath didnt write another novel; her short stories are also excellent
Advantages: Beautifully written, 'poetic' without compromising truth Disadvantages: I can't think of any.

Review of The Bell Jar - Sylvia Plath
Advantages: Honest, poignant, truthful ending Disadvantages: The sense of hopelessness - not very encouraging if you're suffering from depression yourself
