Well, my English teacher strongly recommended this, so I thought that I would give it a go. It is a partly autobiographical novel, written in reflection with the life of the author (sylvia plath). My curiosity proved that I was interested into an insight to mental illness, although i did not feel that the book lived up to its recommendations.
The book follows the story of a young "wannabe" journalist, and her life. It begins with her college life, and her love life. However, these fail her, and she realises that she is not in a stable state of mentality. At some points this gets very graphic, ie, the attempted suicide with razors. However, as she starts to face up to her problem, she goes into a home to help her, although she is then moved to another which appears more suited. At this point I was hoping that it would get more interesting, and gripping, but I failed to get hooked on it, and was left dissappointed.
I would most likely recommend it, as it is a well-written book, not too difficult, but not a book that I found difficult to put down.
Thanks for reading the review.

When I was at school, they forced us to read this one! I was left with a similar feeling as you were.

I usually find Plath a little depressing but her books are interesting. Maureen

Hey! I was just wondering why you would recommend the book when you have only given both the plot and characters a satisfactory rating. I think you should edit it a little and add more to why you disliked the book, because all I have got from it is that it didn't keep you hooked really and so you found it hard to put down. Did you find it one of those awkward books that was alright, but you thought you'd just keep reading anyway? I think the book is alright, not an amazing read, but it is quite good I seem to recall......but maybe this is the mental psychology side coming out of me! I find that sort of stuff fascinating haha! Lots of love, Alastair x

Advantages: Beautifully written, 'poetic' without compromising truth Disadvantages: I can't think of any.

Review of The Bell Jar - Sylvia Plath
Advantages: Honest, poignant, truthful ending Disadvantages: The sense of hopelessness - not very encouraging if you're suffering from depression yourself
