The farmer is snoozing on the hay in his barn, surrounded by his dozy animals, when the fly buzzing about lands on his nose! Of course he sneezes, which sets off a long chain of...
more...consequences, until finally the terrified donkey panics! It has been compared to the traditional rhyme, The House That Jack Built, and has the same satisfying cause and result domino effect!

I have this in the Big Book version and generally read it to the Nursery children or Reception in the first few weeks of term.

- The story -

It begins with a farmer and his animals having a snooze in the barn when a fly lands on the farmer's nose. This makes him sneeze so loudly and forcefully that the fly is catapulted in to the spider's web.
The spider captures the fly which alerts the sparrow who proceeds to chase the spider. This wakes the cat up who leaps at the fly and so on................until all of the animals wake up and make such a commotion that the farmer's wife comes to the barn to ask him what he has done.
It ends with a totally puzzled and dishevelled farmer saying "Nothing my dear, I only sneezed!"

-Illustrations -

I have to say that these 'make' the book. They are immensely detailed and the reader gets a real feel of the barn with the rays of sun shining through the open door.
The animals are superbly protrayed and so life-like as each one leaps and chases the other.
I have taken quite a few photos of the illustrations which I hope will portray how good they are.

- Style and Format -

The text is very limited, with short sentences randomly placed on the page.
The illustrations are given a double page.

This is suitable for 2 years and upwards but I have used it with older KS1 children to look at the vocabulary used, e.g. leapt, wakened, disturbed, captured, scattered, startled etc....

Children do enjoy the commotion that the farmer creates by one sneeze and find the last picture amusing as the farmer sits with a host of brooms, forks, rope and even a broken egg all over him, totally unaware of what he has done wrong.

- Price -
I have the Big Book version of the book as it's great to use with larger groups of children. This was approx 12.99 but take a look at Amazon as they are selling the following used and new copies at bargain prices:
Paperback from 1p
Hardcover from 80p
