Don't you just hate the summer when you have to wear cute strappy sandals on holiday but you don't want to because your feet are covered in cracked hard skin? (I hope it's not just me!) Well, a few years ago I stumbled upon a little miracle that is the Hemp Foot Protector from The Body Shop. Let me digress…
*** I've never heard of The Body Shop, tell me more…*** Anita and Gordon Roddick launched the Body Shop in 1979 with a single store. It has since gone from strength to strength to become a key player in beauty products around the world. It is perhaps better known for its values such as not using animals to test products. Other values include supporting smaller producer communities around the world who supply accessories and natural ingredients, such as hemp seed oil.
*** Hemp seed oil? Isn't that a drug? *** Technically, yes; it's cannabis. However, the level of hemp seed oil that the industry uses is extremely low, and therefore non-intoxicating and safe to use, so you won't be seeing stars and fairies if you inhale any!
*** Ok, if you say so. What makes it a credible foot cream? *** Not only does the foot cream contain hemp seed oil, it also boasts glycerine and lanolin. Hemp contains essential fatty acids that not only provides intensive moisture but can help to repair dry skin. Remember those cracks? Hemp is so good that it can enter the dry skin cell layers and replace lost moisture, while other foot creams only create synthetic later, protecting the skin for a very small amount of time. The glycerine then acts as an extra softener, while the lanolin creates a barrier to protect moisturised skin cells, preventing them from drying out again. The end results - wonderfully soft, and moisturised feet that has a lasting effect.
*** What does it look like? *** The protector is packaged similar to the other hemp products in the range. It comes in a brown tub with a green screw top lid in only 100ml; designed to fit in with most bathroom colour schemes! As you open the tub the smell of hemp is extremely strong. It is very difficult to describe; lingeringly earthy is the only word to come to mind! The cream itself is green and thick in consistency. As it melts on skin temperature, you do not need as much as you think as a little goes a long way.
*** How do I use it? *** It's very easy to use; scoop a small amount (about the size of a 2 pence coin) into the palms of your hands and rub all over the feet until absorbed, which should roughly take about 2-3 minutes depending on how dry your feet are. If you have dry to extremely dry skin try using it twice a day. It is recommended to not use it anywhere else on the body, as it is strong stuff, and has been specially formulated for the feet. If you have sensitive skin, I would recommend undergoing a skin test, by putting a small amount on your hand to see if you have any reaction to the cream, due to its intensity. If you are suffering from extremely dry skin, use the foot protector with cotton socks that the Body Shop also sells. They cost £7 and are 90% cotton and 10% elastic. You apply the cream on your feet, and then pop the socks over the top, giving you a more intensive treatment, and minimising the residue on your carpet!
And if you do take a liking to the foot protector, The Body Shop has a whole hemp range to satisfy all of your dry skin needs, including a face protector, body butter, and my favourite, the hemp hand protector - fantastic for dry hands. It is particularly good for suffers of eczema. My boyfriend gets it on his hands, and last winter they were bleeding where the skin was cracking. He tried everything that the doctor gave him and it didn't work. I convinced him to try the hemp hand protector and within 3 days, his eczema was gone.
The shelf life of the foot protector is 2 years once opened and 3 years unopened so you can stock up if on special offer!
*** How long does the tub last? *** One tub should last roughly 2 - 4 months depending on how often and how much you use. I've had my mine for 3 months - I use it every other day I'm nearly finished. I always stock up when its on offer.
*** What about the most important factor…the cost *** OK, no beating around the bush, it's £7 for 100ml - quite expensive for a foot cream. But considering the ingredients the cream contains, and how wonderfully soft your feet will be, and how long the tub lasts (you get the point!) it's pretty good value in my opinion.
*** Enough! Enough! Sum up! *** There are many myths that hemp plant can actually help the body, and luckily for Anita, it's true. The hemp foot protector is one of my favourite products as the results are instant; scrumptiously soft feet in minutes after applying. The smell isn't particularly wonderful, and because the cream is so thick it will linger, but it's worth putting up with it. Yes it is expensive, probably more than most people will spend on a foot product, but not only does it look great, it has exceptional ingredients that make it one of the best products on the market at present. Go on, treat yourself!

Advantages: You will end up with the softest feet ever! Disadvantages: It does smell a bit strong and is quite pricey
...money. Who wouldn’t? After all the reading of reviews I do, I decided to take a trip to the body shop after I got paid as you've all praised their products highly. I didn't really have anything in mind to buy but was wanting to buy something. I don't often shop in the body shop so all of their products, which sounded wonderful, intrigued me.
'Hmmm, a Hemp range eh? Wonder what this foot protector is like? My feet could do with some pampering ... ...blonde moments! Hemp is from the Cannabis plant. That’s why on the lid it has a picture of a cannabis leaf. (And no, I didn’t notice that either, lol!) I found out while doing a little research that you can't actually 'get high' from Hemp as it doesn't contain the psycho-active ingredient which is called tetrahydrocannabinol (THC).** And it's also now becoming popular to use it as a nappy absorber!?!* Hmm, strange!
The protector comes ...

Advantages: Very soft, moisturised feet. Disadvantages: Some may say the cost.
...Christmas time, largely thanks to the parents of the children I work with and the Hemp Foot Protector was one of the gifts.
Now before I start, I must let you know that my hands suffer from dryness and cracked skin in the winter but for some reason my feet don't, could be largely due to the fact that they are protected from the cold by socks etc and aren't constantly plunged in water, washing paintbrushes etc..
Nevertheless I thought I would give ... ...are still getting the treat on alternate nights, when I remember and actually have time!

As of January 2006 it's £7 per 100ml.
I know that the Body Shop sometimes have 3 for 2 offers on so it's probably worth waiting to get your bargains.
Failing that you could try the Body Shop outlet stores which have massively reduced items.

The product comes in a brownish/green plastic tub with a screw off lid (slightly smaller than the normal boy shop tubs. The lid is adorned with name of the product and a picture of a marijuana leaf.

...and beeswax. It's by far the best prouduct I have found for moisturisation. It works almost instantly and is consistant (sometimes some products work for a short while only and then fail to produce results). The texture of this product is thick and smooth, its also slightly green in colour. I would say that the thing to put people off most probably is the smell. Advantages: Helps Soften Hands & It Works Disadvantages: None
I'm not really the type of guy who uses hand, face or even foot cream, but due to the nature of the sports I am into (Powerlifting & Strongman) I've had to take action.
I started to get callus on my hands, which is basically when the skin gets rough and thick. It's not that painful as such but is very annoying when lifting weight and occasionally did cause my skin to rip. So as everyone does I asked my mum what I should do and she recommended The BodyShopHemp Hand Protector. My first thoughts were 'damn a cream made from cannabis, what the hell!'. So I tried it out anyway what did I have to lose.
The BodyShopHemp Hand Protector is thick creamy in texture and a light green colour. I applied it on my hands twice a day for a few days and it really works. The Hemp Hand Protector doesn't leave your hands feeling greasy or slippery ...
Advantages: Works really well, good value for money Disadvantages: Smell may not be for everyone
a small amount out. You hands feel instantly softer and smoother but it does not make them feel greasy. It rubs in really well and does not leave any visible marks. Id say the smell was a matter of opinion. I'd describe it as an earthy smell. Rather like cut grass in a way.
It costs £9.00 for a 100ml tube which does sound a bit steep for a hand cream but you really do only need to use a small amount so the tube will last a long time. Also if your hands are "normal" , not overly dry or cracked then you may not need something so mistuning as this is made for very dry skin.
White cotton gloves are also available from The BodyShop to use with the cream for a more intensive treatment and a range of other Hemp products are available, including a footprotector and a Body Butter. Like the hand protector, these are aimed at people ...
