Irritatingly, with Christmas and Birthday lists, your mind often goes blank at the crucial moment and you have to scrabble around to think of things you'd like. Irritatingly, with Christmas and Birthday lists, your mind often goes blank at the crucial moment and you have to scrabble around to think of things you'd like. In the bathroom, I looked longingly at my make up and realised that there was no way I'd receive the right shade. Instead, I would be left with a cheaper alternative or the 'nearest' colour to neon orange. I needed something fool proof. At this point I stumbled across my Body Shop Body Butter and decided that it would be lovely to have the matching scrub.
The Boyfriend got the present right and The Body Shop got it very, very wrong.
I am a big fan of your Body Butters, my favourite being Mango. As such, I recently asked for the matching Body Scrub as a present and my boyfriend purchased the 200ml version for me at a cost of £12.00. I am writing to tell you how disappointed we both were when I opened it.
This body scrub smells nothing like mango and the scent is more akin to rotten oranges. It had, before we even opened it, divided into scrub and half a pot of orange oil. Thinking that this was the way it was supposed to be, I used it in the shower. The sensation of using this is gluey, scratchy and very unpleasant. The worst part was that I just couldn't rinse off the sticky sensation it left behind. The layer of grease this product left on my skin was enough that it needed to be scraped off more than washed.
This has only been used once due to its truly disgusting nature, which is upsetting for my boyfriend who thoughtfully went out and got it at my request. At first I thought that this was simply a bad pot, after all, natural ingredients may go rotten. Returning to the shop I discovered that the tester was in a similar state, so I think I'm safe to assume that this is commonplace.
This leaves us £12 out of pocket, with a huge tub of unusable gunk sat in the bathroom. I won't be repurchasing and this will put me off trying any new Body Shop products in future. £12 is not a small amount of money to me and as such I would hesitate to spend it on something I might not like.
People are quick to dismiss things like this and simply change the brand rather than provide feedback. If reformulated, this has the opportunity to be a really nice product. I have enjoyed your products in the past and I hope that my feedback in this letter is useful.
Well, my feedback would have been useful had they bothered to read it. Instead, three weeks later they sent back a letter which I can only assume is standard and of a LOW standard at that.
Dear Malibu Jenny [not my real name, but then they spelt that wrong anyway],
Thank you for contacting us regarding The Body Shop Mango Body Scrub.
We were sorry to hear that you were unhappy with this product. At The Body Shop we want all of our customers to be delighted with our products and we are disappointed when this is not the case.
Price increases are never bought in without a lot of careful thought. We take many factors into account and try not to increase our prices unless we really have to. It's also worth remembering that we use a high percentage of excellent base ingredients and a large selection of our ingredients are purchased from our Community Trade suppliers around the world. As you are probably aware our Body Butters contain many ingredients from Community Trade suppliers for example cocoa beans and shea from Ghana. We feel this is an excellent opportunity for customers to use their purchasing power to put money into communities where help is so desperately needed.
However high quality ingredients are also expensive to buy and unfortunately there are times when price increases have to be made.
We have enclosed a pre-paid label to enable you to return your unwanted product to us at Head Office. Once we have received it we will be happy to refund you with Gift Card [sic].
Customer feedback, both positive and negative, is very important to us and we thank you for taking the time to contact us. Your comments will be logged on our computer database to be forwarded to on to the relevant department in due course.
Thank you for your continued interest in The Body Shop and we look forward to seeing you in one of our stores soon.
So, not only did a large chunk of this letter lack the basic grammatical requirement of commas, it failed to address the problem in hand and the product mentioned was Body Butter, not the revolting scrub. Those 'excellent base ingredients' were wasted once they were mixed into this substandard product and my only continued interest was in getting my money back. It was necessary to take a stand for consumers everywhere. Nothing ventured, nothing gained.
Dear XXXXXXX [ I spelt her name correctly],
While I am delighted to be returning this product, I am disappointed that you did not read my previous letter. It did not concern price increases, rather the nature of the product.
I enclose both a copy of my previous letter and the offending product.
Thank you for your kind offer of a gift card, I am glad to be getting some recompense for this horrible body scrub and all the trouble my boyfriend went to buy it for me. However, I would prefer it if you refunded the money spent as I no longer have any faith in Body Shop products and this body scrub is not fit for sale or purpose.
While I greatly appreciate your commendable ethics in sourcing ingredients from suppliers, this carries no weight unless you award equal respect to your customers.
I would remind you that the consumer rights act states that:
The law says that goods must be: of satisfactory quality - goods must meet the standard that a reasonable person would regard as satisfactory, taking account of any description of the goods, the price and all other relevant circumstances.
I feel that in light of the reviews I have since read on this product and my personal experience of it, it does not in fact meet the standard that a reasonable person would regard as satisfactory. As I have enclosed evidence of this, I hope you will agree.
To be honest, after a letter like that, I almost didn't expect to hear back from them. So, I sent it recorded delivery. I felt 68p was worth it just to force them to respond and make sure that they didn't get the crappy product AND my money.
Three weeks after they received it, I got my response.
Dear Malibu Jenny,
Thank you for your letter regarding The Body Shop Mango Body Scrub.
We were sorry to hear that you were unhappy with this product. At The Body Shop we want all of our customers to be delighted with our products and we are disappointed when this is not the case. [oooh, Déjà vu anyone?]
Unfortunately we are unable to refund by cheque, as we need a receipt showing that it was returned within 28 days. We have enclosed a gift card for the returned product, which we hope you will put towards a product from The Body Shop that you will enjoy using.
I must inform you that you are on the wrong side of the law in this instance…..
BUT, we could go on like this forever. Why bother to continue when neither the products nor customer service are up to scratch? I feel I've done my bit, but if you too have misguidedly frittered away hard earned money in The Body Shop, send your defective items to;
The Body Shop UK & Republic of Ireland Region, UK Customer Services Department, FREEPOST SEA 1084, Littlehampton, West Sussex, BN17 7BR.
And you can look forward to - yep - a gift card and a standard letter. Send their rubbish back and you can fill the bathroom with more...
Advantages: the pot looks nice... Disadvantages: smell, texture, price, fact it doesn't work, stickiness...
...a bad pot, and maybe the others wouldn't be like this one, but I have no intention to buy another one to check. Sorry, but I am broke, and can't go round willy nilly buying things just to check they're bad. Which is a shame really because generally I like Body Shop products. Anyway onto the review.
Everyone knows the history of the Body Shop, and they have a good reputation for delivering high quality products at reasonable (not cheap) prices that ... ...Scrub when I was at the airport. It was part of a 2 for £10 deal I think, so I bought this and some Papaya Body Butter (which actually I really like, so maybe I should give this product the benefit of the doubt...). I spent a long time smelling the testers trying to decide which flavours I liked the most, and although the papaya was my favourite, I bought the body scrub in mango for a bit of variety. The pot I ended up buying was sealed tightly shut ...

Advantages: Beautiful, really works, smells delicious! Disadvantages: The pots of a silly design!
...than over here. I bought the passion fruit body butter and the Mango Body Scrub, which is what I'm talking about here.
It cost about £13 English I think, if my conversions right, and it usually isn't.
I had a smell of the tester before I bought it and it's delicious! It does have a slightly artificial hint to it, but only in the way that Mango sorbet has an artificial hint to it. The lid of the pot has a close up photo of a mango on it, with a ... ...moisturise. VERY DRY SKIN." The rest of the pot is clear with another little label going around it with similar info on.
I thought it would be great while I was on holiday, as my skin dries up in the sun, and it's always good to exfoliate to remove dead skin cells, and make your tan shine through.
So I got back to the hotel all excited about using it, and it was lovely.
The scrub is made of sugar and salt and felt like it was actually doing something, ...

Advantages: works really well Disadvantages: a bit expensive, never quite fully washes off
...made a huge difference to the state of my skin, and it smells fab!
Each tub is 200ml and it lasts for months and months. At £12 I found it quite expensive but thought that it would be worth it if I used it once a week. I have to say that it really was!
It contains sugar and salt which beautifully exfoliates your skin and the oil re-hydrates and moisurises. The smell of mango is really strong and mouth-wateringly good!
The tub is really attractive ... ...The ingredients label on the bottom of the tub is really easy to read.
I found that you only need a small amount of this scrub to cover your whole body, so it lasts ages and I use it on a weekly basis. There is looooooads of exfoliating salt and sugar in it so you don't need very much.
I first tried using it on a sponge but found that the grains got stuck, so I resorted to rubbing the scrub around with my fingers and that worked fine. Then you ...

As a HUGE fan of the Body Shop, I was quite excited to receive a large gift pack containing a mango shower gel, body butter and body scrub. I gleefully opened up the bottles and tubs and took a deep whiff of each.. but when I got to the scrub.. my face probably fell to the floor.
The body scrub looks and smells pretty awful. It has a sort of 'plasticy' smell which does not even vaguely resemble mangoes! It also has a manky yellowy-grey colour to ... ...brave and try it out. The srub has a very very thick consistency, and is quite hard to get out of the tub, and spread on your skin. So I ended up scooping out a large dollop and *trying* to use it. I found that it was really sticky and all the sugary scrubby bits just dissolved immediately in the water... All that was left was a horribly sticky feeling on my legs, which I spent ages trying to wash off again. It did not exfoliate my skin at all, just ...

Advantages: Very moisturising Disadvantages: Not scrubby enough for me
...this purchase. Anyway, the product. Packaging is OK, nice big pot thats easy to open, and because its big, its easy to get your hands in and scoop up a big lump of scrub. Colour, a little insipid, but the smell! Woah, it hits you as it leaps from the pot. Fruity, fruity, fruity! It really does smell like Mangos, but with a hint of the artificial about it. Its very sweet. The main ingredients are sunflower oil, sugar & salt, and it does taste very ... ...I use a lot. The sunflower oil & sweet almond oil left my skin feeling slightly greasy but not too bad, I didnt need to use any body lotion afterwards. The sweet mango smell did linger on my skin. I would possibly buy this again, and would certainly try other fragrances in this range. ...

Advantages: Moisturises dry skin. Disadvantages: Smell is a bit too overpowering.
~ provides essential fatty acids that help repair the skin't moisture barrier thus helping to restore moisture, smoothness and suppleness
Shea nut butter ~ moisturises and leaves skin soft and silky smooth.
All the ingredients obviously work very well together as my skin is very well moisturised after a couple of applications it's just that the smell is just a little too overpowering for me.
If the smell of Mango is your cup of tea then The BodyShop do the following in the Mango range:
BodyScrub, Bath and Shower Gel and Soap
This certainly wouldn't be my first choice in smells, much preferring coconut etc but each to their own! ...
