Dave's Dystopia

Advantages: Inventive, ambitious, some fantastic ideas and characters.
Disadvantages: Difficult writing style to get into, loses its way badly towards the end.

...all but Britain’s highest points, the book were rediscovered? And what if (the last one, I promise!) the words of the Book of Dave were taken as gospel, and life on the small island of Ham organised according to its decrees?

Will Self’s 2006 novel looks at what happens when (in the author’s own words) “people follow something just because it is written in an old book”. In this post-flood world, the residents of Ham (“Hamsters”) abide ...
...attempt to prove their “davinity". The island’s people are divided into two – men live together, women live together, but rarely do the two meet. Women are either “Opares” or “Boilers”, depending on whether they’ve had children – for it is acknowledged that there are few things more evil than mothers. Children are subject to changeover – living with the dads for half their time, the mums for the other.

Even in the natural world ... more

A dystopic vision of future London.

Advantages: Good story with rounded characters
Disadvantages: Use of vernacular makes for hard going in places

...periods, one is set in the far future and the other is set in the early 21st century i.e present day.The chapters alternate between the two settings. The story concerns a London cabbie, called Dave Rudman, who writes a book for his estranged son. At the time of writing this, Dave is quite unstable mentally and the vitriol he pours into the volume against his ex-wife and women in general is downright nasty. Along with the usual racist views well ...
...of their kids for half the week each. The rest of the book consists of the "Knowledge" (the cabbie's absolute knowledge of London and its streets-essential for London cab drivers.) Dave buries the book in the hope that his son will find it. The book is indeed dug up, but not by his son. It is dug up many years in the future and is hailed as scripture and a blueprint for society. This society is the setting for the other chapters of the book. ...

Reviews which might be of interest for "The Book of Dave - Will Self"

A great way to give up smoking !!

Advantages: The style and writing is excellent.
Disadvantages: A rather dull plot, and rather bizarre.

THE BUTT WILL SELF I started reading 'The Butt' by Will Self really expecting to enjoy it as I had found his earlier book "The Book of Dave" excellent and hard to put down. THE BOOK The plot of "The Butt" revolves around American, Tom Brodzinski, who is on holiday with his family in an unnamed country somewhere in the middle east. He is about to stop smoking, and after enjoying his last cigarette on the balcony of his apartment , he flicks the cigarette butt which unfortunatly lands on, and badly burns, the elderly Reggie Lincoln. Because the said butt had passed through public space before hitting Lincoln , the local authorities look at Brodzinski's action and he he is charged with assault with "a projectile weapon with a toxic payload,". On top of this it turns out that the American ...

Review of The Butt - Will Self

6 stories held together by the thinnest of threads

Advantages: Some interesting takes on a future world
Disadvantages: Dissapointing end to all 6 stories - a long read for little payback

a great devastation to earth. This was a difficult one to read due to the language being a form English that has been broken down and moved on (similar to Will Self's 'Book of Dave'). I won't go on too much but, safe to say, the 'inter-connected' stories are nothing of the sort, which is a shame really as, as separate stories, they have a certain appeal. All but the last two stories, about a genomed female and a time after 'the fall', were generally rather dull for me. The futuristic stories do provide some interesting thinking on are our current society and I found these much more interesting - I would have liked to know a lot more about these. I persevered with this book as I was convinced that, at some point, there would be a light bulb moment where everything came together. It never happened and, as a result, left me rather ...
