Fairytales and Nightmares for Grownups!

Advantages: Its an excellent, imaginative story with great characters
Disadvantages: slow to begin with.

Advantages: Great story
Disadvantages: A bit dark sometimes

...fan, I was hooked from the first few pages of his first novel Every Dead Thing, and although this book wasn't part of the Charlie Parker series I wanted to read it. == Synopsis == Set during the war, the story follows David who is a young boy who suffers from obsessive compulsive disorder, he is compelled to tap items such as the tap an even number of times before and after he uses them. He does this in the hope it will help his mother, who is very ...

Eventually his father gets remarried and pretty soon David has a half brother. David feels alone in this new situation and he is angry at the world, and is angry at his new brother Georgie. After a huge fight with Rose, David is lying in his bed, when he hears the voice of ...

The Book of Lost Things - John Connolly

Advantages: A brilliant, well written book
Disadvantages: None in my opinion

...book is so different to the others as it doesn't involve Charlie Parker, the main chaacter in all of his other books. I was given this book as a gift, so I've no idea how much it cost. The RRP is £12.99, but I have seen it for sale on Amazon and WH Smith for £7.79. The synopsis is : 'Once upon a time, there was a boy who lost his mother !' As twelve-year-old David takes refuge from his grief in the myths and fairytales so beloved of his dead mother, ...
...to happen. That is when the Crooked Man comes. And David is violently propelled into a land populated by heroes, wolves and monsters in his quest to find the legendary Book of Lost Things. I love reading, and have read all of John Connolly's other books. The very first line of this story had me gripped and I didn't want to put this book down. I read this book well into the early hours and finished it within a couple of days. There are some very ...

A Joyous Adult Fairy Tale

Advantages: Perfect for all ages
Disadvantages: Possibly a little too short

The next time you see an adult reading a Harry Potter book then you should simply walk over to them and hand over a copy of this. The Book of Lost Things is exactly what adult fantasy should be. Connolly dazzles you with his imagination by describing all manner of weird and wonderful places and creatures, yet all that is just a backdrop for many deeper musings that we all can relate to. It's a very definite step away from his previous books but is ...

Advantages: A lovely book for all ages and well written.
Disadvantages: I found no disadvantages to this book but thats my opinion

...was instantly attached to it. the first line just grabbed me and I read well into the night. Usually when i get caught in a book, i dont read words, i feel as thought im there and how it was written, I felt I was directly beside David (the main character). I didnt want to put the book down. I read alot of books, fantasy mainly but before I read this book, A book had never scared me before, no matter how beautifully written. but when I got to a certain ...

Simply brilliant

Advantages: The perfect book
Disadvantages: None

Alon, King and Straub can be outstanding or mediocre in equal measure. Together, they've created a book of pure beauty. The Talisman is, like John Connolly's Book of Lost Things, an adult fairy tale that's to die for. Another book that you should give to any adult reading Harry Potter. The Talisman has everything that the classic fairy tale has. A princess, a sacred artefact, magic, monsters and a young boy who has to face things no boy should on a quest to save someone he loves. Add to that a razor edge of graphic violence and some genuine terror, which elevates this book to a whole new level. The characters are going to stay with you for a long, long time and the imagery that the writing invokes will make you feel, when thinking back, like you have seen this as a movie. It is simply that powerfully descriptive ...
