The book has 128 pages and is full colour throughout like other expert books.
The book starts off with an interesting ... ...craze that hit Holland in the 17th Century.This chapter also tells us when the first sightings in Britain were of certain bulbs etc which I found interesting.
The book looks at all forms of bulbs not just "true " bulbs . By other forms of bulb I mean tubers , corms , rhizomes etc which are not strictly speaking bulbs at all .

The book has 128 pages and is full colour throughout like other expert books. The book starts off with an interesting short chapter on the history of bulbs mentioning Tulipmania that well known craze that hit Holland in the 17th Century.This chapter also tells us when the first sightings in Britain were of certain bulbs etc which I found interesting.
The book looks at all forms of bulbs not just "true " bulbs . By other forms of bulb I mean tubers , corms , rhizomes etc which are not strictly speaking bulbs at all .
The book then takes on a similar format to other expert books .There is an A-Z of all the common bulbs you are likely to ever see in a typical garden. You name it this book covers it . Acidanthera ,anenome, begonia , crocus , daffodils , freesia's , muscari ,tulips etc are all covered.
What I really like is at the front there is a pronouncing page . This splits the bulb names up into syllabuls showing you how to correctly pronounce the bulb no matter how difficult a mouthful it appears. It really does work too .
For instance TIGRIDIA -ti-grid-ee-a . See it's easy with the doc on your team.
Another example is LILIUM - lil - ee-um
There is a guide to safe handling of bulbs , how to feed , propagate and grow them and much much more in this fine value for money book.
I would reccomend this to anyone interested in plants . It's affordable , accurate and well set out.
It is still available at places like WhSmith , Waterstones etc and cheap discount book stores !
Advantages: Light weight, good layout for easy reference, semi-wipeable cover. Disadvantages: Only semi-wipeable cover, leaves you wanting more info (maybe this comment should be under advantage).
...books to use, I've found the Expert range including this one extremely useful. It's 1/4in (1cm) thick, with a softbacked semi-wipeable cover, (useful if taken into the garden), approx. 7 x 9ins (18 x 24cm for those metrically minded). Reasonable priced for the info. you're getting, stocked by good garden centres, or even appearing as offers in book clubs if you keep your eyes peeled.
The layout is excellent for dipping into or a more leisurely read. ... ...chump next time you're in the garden centre). The main bulk of this book covers bulbs in an alphabetical layout - the style is chatty but informative with brief info. covering varieties, site & soil, plant details and propagation on each plant. There's also further more details general advice on planting, care, increasing stock, where to put the bulbs, how to get the best from them, what bulbs flower best in what months (helpful planning tips). The book is easy to read and the layout is easy to get around. The book covers an explanation about what bulbs are and what the different type of bulbs do.
The book has a section on different varieties of bulbs which are placed in alphabetic order, which does really help. The book covers everything from site and soils, gives great plant details and there propagation. Also some fantastic and clear photo evidence is ... ...The book also covers plant and planting care, How to increase your stock and also where to plat your bulb to get the best out of them, for example shady or sunny areas in your garden.
Basically this book will give the information so you will have plants all year round growing in your garden
