This book is like comfort food. Everybody should have a copy of this book at home to pull out when they are feeling under the weather or basically just need cheering up. Believe it or not, I have bought three or four copies of this book because I just have to keep passing it on.

I blush because I have read this book about five times over the past five years and I still get ambushed by the funny bits when I'm not expecting them and if you are lucky enough to get a copy please do not read it on the bus or in a public place because when you start laughing, people give you funny looks! I know because I have done it.
This author has written five books and two of them have been turned into films. You may recognise them as Wide Eyed and Legless staring Julie Walters and Lost for Words which became a television film staring Dame Thora Hird. His publishers Transworld are very good at passing on letters and Deric is very kind and sends you a postcard with Thermal on the front and a message on the back. Derec has also written a regular column for Your Cat Magazine in the past.
His books are
Diana's Story (A harrowing book about the life and death of his first wife)
Lost for Words (About his elderly and accentric mother)
I'm a Stranger Here Myself
Enough to Make a Cat Laugh
A Play on Words
The Library is a good place to try his books but once you have read this book, you may want to buy a copy to keep. Thank you for reading.
...that it was one of the best literary investments she could ever have made. This charming little tome drags the reader on a lovely journey of enlightenment and discovery, as writer Deric Longden comes to the wonderful realisation that he is, in fact, a Cat's Best Friend. It all begins when he spots his next door neighbour's new kitten sitting on an upturned bucket in the yard. When the day turns rainy and the little mite is still out in the cold, ... ...new love affair culminates in the sneaky adopting of the kitten, and the story runs from there. Fears of sheepskin rugs, drunken misbehavior with spilt wine, climbing trees, a pet sultana called Ralph, and all sorts of other scrumptious quirks and mishaps ensue as Deric and his kitten bond, culminating in Aileen - who is almost blind - shutting him in the fridge with a pack of Danish bacon. The wonderful image of Deric thawing him out in a shrunken ...

...a home, but outside and the Author takes pity on the little creature. Of course , once he is invited in to the Author's home, the mischief starts!
The book is written in the first person mainly, IE, from the Author's viewpoint, but also as if the cat is thnking; it is cleverly done and very readable. The characters, both human and animal are endearing and the whole thing is one relaxing read and hard to put down.
my only point of disadvantage, if ...

...this wonderfully talented gentlemans books. the first two concentrating primarily on derics beloved wife diana and her fight with teminal illness. but even then his ability to make you part of his world, mearly through his writing, jumps out at you in abundance.
the cat who came in from the cold is a story about his day to day life, as are all his books. but for the most part you find yourself seeing derics world through the eyes of his cats. thermal, ... ...the study. that is of course when he isnt teaching his sultana a thing or two.! then there is the house guests of course, more cats, and finally deric and his wife aisling. aisling incedently is blind, and although i hate to sound rude, adds major humour to the whole book, simply by the things she manages to do and say. all of his books will have most people hooked. however, if you own a cat, you will be in stitches for the most of the read. only ...

Advantages: Great book if you love Deric Longden's writing Disadvantages: You would be better starting with an earlier book if new to his writing
I have to confess that I do enjoy DericLongden's books. He has a wonderful, somewhat offbeat but simplistic, way of looking at life that I love and his sense of humour has me chuckling away as I read so I was really pleased to see that he had a new book out and I could hardly wait for it to arrive from Amazon.
Paws in the Proceedings is the latest in a line of books which looks at life in the Longden household and, given the title, I was hoping it would make a lovely follow on from 'The cat that cameinfrom the cold' and 'Enough to make a cat laugh' which were his two previous book about the felines in his life. It sort of does that because woven throughout the book is the tale of the latest arrival, Nokia, and how he fits in with Thermal and Tigger who feature in the earlier books but it also continues with varied tales ...
