Never have i read such a wonderfully captivating childrens book. As any parent will tell you, keeping childrens full attention whilst reading to them is difficult to say the least particularly when they are tired at bedtime. Having read this book dozens of times to my 4 year old it never fails to keep both of us totally engrossed right to the very end.

The story is told by a little boy who together with his sister Sally find themselves bored, stuck in doors on a wet day with nothing to do. Their imaginations conjure a mischievious cat (in a hat) who despite vigourous protests from the pet fish, sets about entertaining them with a series of games and tricks. The first game is called Up Up Up with the fish that sees the cat balancing the fish and various other random objects whilst bouncing on a ball. Of course this ends in disaster and the fish ends up falling into a teapot and from here on in he is refered to as the fish in the pot.
Another game sees the cat bring in 2 polite little creatures who are known as thing 1 and thing 2. They proceed to cause havoc by flying kites and crashing into walls. This chaos is brought swiftly to a halt as the little boy catches them in his net and sends them packing with the sad dejected cat.
The house proud fish then spots Mother on her way home and panic sets in as they realise that they will not be able to tidy all of the mess created by the cat and his friends. Just as things are looking desperate the Cat returns to help them out and tidy up all of the mess and he manages to leave just as Mother arrives leaving her none the wiser as to all of the things that went on there that day.
I think this story is a must read for all children. The rhythm of the poetry and the bizarre content of the story make this a very original and thouroughly entertaining book.
Recommended to all 10/10
The RRP as printed on the sleeve is £4.99 although it is currently available at Amazon for £1.18(new). Fantastic value for money, even if you have to pay a fiver.

Only careful examination of the illustrations, especially those including people and not bizarre fantastic creatures, reveals that many of his books are over half a century old. His heady mix of illustrations, for which the word quirky must have been invented and the text, which provides verbal equivalent ... ...Dr Seuss books, both in the story lines (in those books that actually have a discernible one) and particularly in the linguistic aspects of the text. They read a bit as if the principle of free association was applied to pure language, similar to when small children play with the language in a way that can leave more traditionally minded parents flabbergasted at the complete nonsense that gets uttered. The genius of Dr Seuss lies in the fact that ...

Advantages: Beautiful illustrations, excellent book Disadvantages: A bit short
This is a review of the 2003 UK edition of The Cat in the Hat published by Collins. (Harper Collins children's books, a division of Harper Collins publishers Ltd. www.harpercollins.co.uk). The book was printed and bound in Hong Kong.
The Cat in the Hat was written by the late, American born author Theodor Seuss Geisel, (1904-1991), under his nom-de-plume; Dr Seuss. It was first published in New York, USA in 1957 and in the UK a year later in 1958.
... ...pages feature full sized illustrations. The print is quite large and there aren't many lines of text on a typical page. This helps younger readers and stops them losing interest.
Dr Seuss tragically died in 1991 and in my opinion the world lost one of it's greatest children's authors. By this point Dr Seuss had 46 books published and they hold sold over 200 million copies world wide. Dr Seuss both wrote and illustrated all 46 of his books. The books ...

Advantages: Teaches children about rhyme, fun book to read Disadvantages: none
Why should you buy The Cat In The Hat?
Well, for those of you who have never heard of the author i will give a little background information. Dr Seuss, the pseudonym of US author Theodor Seuss Geisel (1904-1991) wrote The Cat In The Hat in 1957 and it is still as fresh and relevent today as it was 44 years ago.
The style of the book is simple. It has a limited vocabulary set in an energetic rhyme which helps young children to easily join in with ... ...half year old already knows the book off by heart and enjoys joining in when we read it together. The unusual drawings also lend the book further surrealism and proves to be an interesting discussive point to add to whilst reading the story.
Since rhyming has been theoretically deemed essential in helping the young to read (so my course on child development has informed me), the humourous, easy-going style of this book can be seen as an interesting ...

Advantages: There is a cat, there is a hat! Disadvantages: Not a one, no, even one!
...What would I do without the cat?
Where would I be without the hat?
I do not know, I can not say
I wouldn't want to see that day
For in this book, so short and sweet
is such, for all, a great big treat
The cat of mischief, cat of wise
Cat with gleaming knowing eyes
And of the hat!
What's up with that?
Where did those stripes come from?
Yes I know
Poor grammar, oh,
I'm really not that dum!
I would the world would know the cat
I hope ... ...never come again
To grace the page with such a pen
To give us such unbridled joy
To please and, yes, and to annoy
But in the end to satisfy
With merriment and laughing sigh
For on this day we give our thanks
For treasure that is not in banks
But on the printed page before us
Thank you, oh dear Dr. Seuss!

...bad first impression by getting the acclaimed classic Green Eggs and Ham out the library! I have to say I thought it was total and utter tosh and couldn't see what all the fuss about Dr seuss books was? That was until we progressed via a birthday present a book of the Cat in the hat and I totally understand why now. The version of the book we have, is the miniature edition published in the UK in 2001 by the publishing house Harper Collins Children's ... ...market. This is reflected in the fact that the book is written using only 220 words so it's easy for children to read and follow and quick and easy for parents doing the bedtime ritual! My son certainly has picked up his vocabulary since reading this book, he reads the rhymes before I even start reading it and he is only two and half ( we do have the tape as well though which probably helps!) The Cat in the hat is a weird and wacky story of a girl ...

The Catin the Hat is a wonderful book which has been written by DrSeuss. It is the follow on book to the very popular Catin the Hat. The book begins by telling us that this was no time for play, fun or games as there are jobs to be done. All of the snow had to go, when mother went down to the town she said that all of the snow had to go and she picked Sally and me to do it. The little boy goes on to say that as they ...

not encouraging children to read. The findings of this lead Geisel to thinking about important words when publishing a children?s book. This lead to one of the best selling and most popular children?s books ?The Catin The Hat?
DrSeuss as he then become used his understanding of children?s passion for rhyming to produce some of the most well read books.
The education value that his works contain are priceless. I know from first hand experience that How the Grinch Stole Christmas certainly got my son interested in reading, through the wonderful rhyming, simple use of child-friendly language and wonderful cartoon-like illustrations.
