Never have i read such a wonderfully captivating childrens book. As any parent will tell you, keeping childrens full attention whilst reading to them is difficult to say the least particularly when they are tired at bedtime. Having read this book dozens of times to my 4 year old it never fails to keep both of us totally engrossed right to the very end.
The way the story is written automatically makes you read it with an enthusiastic rhythm which has you bouncing from word to word and struggling to turn the pages over fast enough to keep the story flowing.
I dont know why but i always seem to read the parts of the cat in a thick yorkshire accent. It always seems the most appropriate way to read it but i'm sure its far from how Dr Seuss had imagined it when he wrote the book. (i have no connections with Yorkshire if you're wondering).
The story is told by a little boy who together with his sister Sally find themselves bored, stuck in doors on a wet day with nothing to do. Their imaginations conjure a mischievious cat (in a hat) who despite vigourous protests from the pet fish, sets about entertaining them with a series of games and tricks. The first game is called Up Up Up with the fish that sees the cat balancing the fish and various other random objects whilst bouncing on a ball. Of course this ends in disaster and the fish ends up falling into a teapot and from here on in he is refered to as the fish in the pot.
Another game sees the cat bring in 2 polite little creatures who are known as thing 1 and thing 2. They proceed to cause havoc by flying kites and crashing into walls. This chaos is brought swiftly to a halt as the little boy catches them in his net and sends them packing with the sad dejected cat.
The house proud fish then spots Mother on her way home and panic sets in as they realise that they will not be able to tidy all of the mess created by the cat and his friends. Just as things are looking desperate the Cat returns to help them out and tidy up all of the mess and he manages to leave just as Mother arrives leaving her none the wiser as to all of the things that went on there that day.
I think this story is a must read for all children. The rhythm of the poetry and the bizarre content of the story make this a very original and thouroughly entertaining book.

The RRP as printed on the sleeve is £4.99 although it is currently available at Amazon for £1.18(new). Fantastic value for money, even if you have to pay a fiver.
