To put it simply this is one of my all time favourite books (and the same is said by one of my friends who i recommended it to). I found it a little strange at first mainly because i wasnt used to the kind of language that the author (J.D Salinger) used, mainly because the book was written so long ago (1951) and basically times and language have changed a great deal.
The book revolves around Holden Caulfield and the 2 (or 3) day period from leaving his boarding school in the middle of the night to his returning home, via an eventful trip to New York. The book is basically all his thoughts and adventures during this time from him getting drunk and pretending to be shot to having a run in with an elevator operator\pimp.
In the book you meet many different characters who are unique in their own way from the prostitute Sunny to old school friends or even just the taxi driver who gets "sore" when asked about the ducks in central park (it makes sense if you read the book, which i strongly recommend that you do).
Another interesting feature of the book is the conspiracy theory that is behind it, as many of the most famous assassins such as Lee Harvey Oswald and the guy that shot John Lennon (cant think of his name at the moment) either owned a copy or actually had a copy on their person when they were arrested. Due to this fact and the recent movie Conspiracy theory (starring Mel Gibson and Julia Roberts) the book has become infamous in the myth and legends of Conspiracy theorists.
This book is truly a classic and I recommend that everyone should read it at least once. I really dont want to go into too much detail about what happens in it, as i think that would probably ruin it for anyone who doesnt want to know what happens. To give you an example of how good it is i have read it 3 times in less than a year and i think it shall be the next book i read after i've finished the one im on at the moment. My friend was also so engrossed in it that he managed to read almost all of it in one night!.
