The Celestine Prophecy is the story of an American’s spiritual awakening on a journey across South America in search of the ‘Manuscript’, a lost Mayan text which reveals through ten insights all the secrets both of this life and the next.
Lots of my friends are enthusiastic followers of many so-called ‘New Age’ philosophies and ideas. They variously visit mediums, wear crystals, follow macrobiotic diets, practise reiki and time-line therapy and others too numerous to mention. They regard me as quite a sad sort of person who imposes needless restrictions on herself because of her feet of clay. They pressured me into reading The Celestine Prophecy insisting, as usual, that it would change my life.
I read it, it didn’t.
I can’t deny that I believe in the truth of the practical philosophy of this book. Practising tolerance, believing the best of people, and projecting a friendly, positive attitude will, by and large, result in a similar feedback from others and thus lead to a happier life. However, I wouldn’t need months in South America searching for an ancient artefact whilst being pursued by evil Catholic priests and armed, violent government agents to tell me that. Still, I suppose you need a plot.
I simply can’t believe there is ‘another side’, nor that if I become a sufficiently good and spiritual person I will develop a beauteous, shining aura around my head that only others of a similarly beneficent frame of mind will be able to see. Still less can I think that if I can take all this just that one stage further my vibration levels will cause me simply to disappear in some kind of cosmic promotion to a higher level of existence.
To all those of you who do believe such things I’m sorry if I sound like I’m poking fun; I’m not. It’s just not for me. Each of us has his or her own philosophy by which we live, and if this is yours, and makes you more happy and fulfilled then, for you, I’m all for it.
But back to the book. Although it’s not particularly well written and the baddies are mere caricatures it is a racy and entertaining read. The Celestine Prophecy can’t be all that bad because I did finish it and for a few weeks, while it remained fresh in my mind, I was inspired to try to be a better person. Its theme, whether you take it on a spiritual or on a purely practical level projects a message about a tolerant and positive way of living, which, were we all to practise it, would perhaps result in a better world for us all.
