Advantages: Very evocative, thrillingly suspenseful, great characterisation Disadvantages: None
of the characterisation makes you care about the characters very quickly, and so you must because the action of the story takes place over a very short period. The skilled way that the author, StevenGalloway, creates such depth of character so quickly is important because their experiences are more important than their history but I do believe you need to make a connection with the characters in order not only to care about what happens to them but to really live the experiences with them.
I can't remember a book that has provoked in me such a feeling of really experiencing what the characters do. In besieged Sarajevo the simplest journey could result in death or injury. People would wait for hours to cross a road, or see others take a chance and be killed before they could get to the other side. A short walk during peacetime now took hours as detours had ...
Advantages: Plenty to see; good value for money; Disadvantages: No budget flights yet (but also a good thing!)

Having read Stephen Galloway?s ?The Cellist of Sarajevo? in which two of the characters describe the dangerous task of fetching water during the siege, I was pleased to be able to travel down ?Sniper?s Alley? and see the location of the bridges that civilians had to use to get to the city brewery, the only place where water could be obtained. I wasn?t prepared for just how far this was and when I looked around me as I stood on the bridge, I was horribly aware of just how many places there were for a sniper to hide. Although the major rebuilding of Sarajevo was largely done by 2003 (you see very few empty and wrecked buildings in the centre now) there are still signs of the war; you will see bullet marks on the facades of all but the very newest buildings and some schools and public and commercial buildings have plaques on the exterior wall ...
Advantages: An important piece of recent history, interesting, enlightening Disadvantages: Not a great deal to see so for the really interested only
In the mid 1990s I watched television news bulletins transfixed at the pictures coming from the besieged city of Sarajevo. For over four years the people of Sarajevo were trapped in their city, often cold, usually hungry as missiles rained down on them. In spite of many months of fierce attack plucky Sarajevo managed to defend itself ? thanks mainly to an 800 metre tunnel that connected the city with ?Free Bosnia?.
How the exact location of the tunnel was not discovered by the Serbs is a miracle. The tunnel runs under Sarajevo Airport which, although it was designated a neutral zone, was often closed due to heavy shelling. The Serbs knew roughly where the tunnel was but were never able to pinpoint it exactly. The tunnel was no secret; everyone knew of its existence, Serbs included. Food, fuel, medical supplies and arms ? all were ...
