...to. He tries to do the right thing while having to carry his family through rough times too. Once again, Grisham's characters are well developed and interesting, and the story moves briskly. Grisham succeeds in focusing on the boy and his reactions to the events, and how his lawyer tries to protect him and his family while trying to outsmart all opponents. This is a good read from Grisham. One thing, though - a lawyer going to all this trouble for ...

It starts out with two young boys who are out on a walk when they chance on a man about to commit suicide - the man tells the older boy a deadly secret (which is the reason for the man's suicide). The younger of the two boys, Ricky, is so traumatized by the event, that he has to be hospitalized.
It turns out that the man who had died, had been involved with some notorious gang who had cops and ... ...It is here, at the hospital, that young Mark Swain overhears a conversation between an ambulance chasing lawyer, and a prospective client, and he hears the entire negotiation going on. Mark decides that because of the fact that he had gotten his brother into that state, all because he had gone out for a walk to smoke a cigarette, he would need to take it upon himself to find a lawyer to represent them. His mother after all, needed all the help she ...

It is in these woods they come across a man trying to commit suicide, the man is in fact a lawyer on the mobs payroll. Advantages: Well-written, moving, excellent plotline Disadvantages: I missed half my holiday as a result!
...on holiday. After opening the front page, the holiday was instantly forgotten as Grisham began to weave yet another tale of mystery and suspense. I could not put it down.
I think this has got to be among his best novels so far, although I end up saying that about each one! The story is hard-hitting, emotional, and jam-packed full of suspense. The way he describes the boy, so tough and street-wise, but when faced with hard-core crime, even he begins ... ...The character research he put into her must have taken months. She is everything she appears not to be at face value, and as a result is seriously underestimated by all the big officials she and her client are up against. A real girl-power icon!
After reading the book, the film seemed so short and uneventful. If you're going to see the film, definitely read the book.
Grisham has outdone himself yet again, although I think even he must realise it ...

Advantages: Very readable and enjoyable Disadvantages: May have you calculating the costs of your own Christmas
Skipping Christmas is JohnGrisham's 2001 offering. His previous works include The Juror, The Pelican Brief, The Client and The Firm. Grisham usually writes novels set in and around law courts and legal issues, with key characters who are lawyers and defendants, Skipping Christmas is pleasantly different to this norm. I know that the book is listed in the 'thriller' section on Ciao, but this isn't the right place for it.
My copy of Skipping Christmas is a hardback, published in 2001 by Century, with an RRP of £9.99. I didn't pay full price for this book although I did buy it before the paperback was available, I paid £3 in The Works, and I know that Amazon has the hardcover for £8.99 new, from 1p (plus p&p) used, and the paperback for £5.49 new, from 1p (plus p&p) used.
The cover of my copy is very attractive, it's a bright red ...
Advantages: Could be used as a doorstop when you have finished it Disadvantages: Boring. No feeling for main character.
I absolutely love JohnGrisham, but was so disappointed with this book. His earlier books, The Firm, The Client etc had me on the edge of my seat, and I couldn't put them down until they were finished. Recently his novels have been less addictive - but still worth a read. This book however is worth leaving well alone.
It is Grishams first factual novel. Unfortunately it centres around a would-have-been baseball player, who is basically a bit of a dead beat. The book is written about a so-called travesty of justice that occured when this man is convicted of a murder he didn't commit. The only problem is the main character is such a low life that you can't help feeling that prison is the best place for him! It is difficult for the reader to develop any sympathy for this man, and the book drones on about all the mistakes that were made ...
