Baldacci's sequel to "The Camel Club" is an exciting thriller that will get your pulse racing as he brings together a bunch of the most unusual characters to solve the mystery of the death of the Library of Congress' chief librarian.
Unlikely Camel Club member Caleb finds himself thrust in the deep end as the club use his contacts to delve deeper into the mysterious circumstances surrounding curator's death and he is pushed to his wits end as he strays further and further out of his comfort zone. Baldacci does an excellent job of portraying a character who is genuinely scared and with whom (most of) his audience can identify.
Once again it is left to Oliver Stone to come up with the plan that saves the day but has he met his match this time? Baldacci uses Stone's character effectively and with just the right mixture of doubt into the equation as to Stone's ability to pull it off.
One thing lacking in this book however is a sense of realism. Stone's crew always seem to be cutting it fine and nearly always end up on just on the right side of the law. However, there is no doubt in my mind that as a piece of pure fiction this book is a credit to it's author and a great read for anyone looking to escape from reality for a few hours.
Advantages: Excellent Read Disadvantages: Must read the pre-quel first to get a feel for the characters
...since then, my favourite being The Camel Club.
So when a sequel ('The Collectors') came out i was unsure whether he could pull it off again.
What attracted me the first time round were the central charachters. Baldacci gives us just enough information for the purposes of the story, but allows us to make up our own minds of how the charachters come to be.
I am happy to say that he has not messed with this formula, he again gives us just enough ... ...do.
I am not going to wax on about the plot, the twists and turns (of which there are many) of this book, suffice to say that if you like thrillers and books that you simply cannot put down then this is one author that you simply must read. ...
