For anyone unfamiliar with flower fairy books, they are the collected work of an artist and poet, Cicely Mary Barker, who was born in Croydon in 1895.She, had epilepsy as a child and was frail and delicate for most of her life. As a result of this she was unable to attend school regularly, and taught herself at home to draw, write and paint. She had a great love of children, due to the fact that her sister Dorothy ran a nursery to raise money for the family, and it is believed her love of children, combined with an active imagination and a keen interest in gardening, inspired her to write the flower ...

Fab Fairies!

Advantages: lovely illustrations, descriptions and puzzles
Disadvantages: none

, along with their paintbrushes and brightly coloured paint are responsible for all the rainbows we see high up in the sky. There are also Flower Fairies, Snow Fairies and most important of all Dream Fairies - all with their important jobs to do. The descriptions of any of these fairies are not too long but the ideas are so lovely that they really do capture a child's imagination! Each of the descriptions are on one page and on the page opposite is a jigsaw puzzle showing the fairy doing what has been described. Each puzzle has about twenty reasonably sized pieces that are probably most suitable of children around the age of four. The pictures are all very lovely and the pieces all slot in together and fit into a frame on the page. Unlike some other puzzle books we have, the pieces all fit together very well and there is no problem with them ...

Review of Fairies Jigsaw Book - Usborne Books

Mary Berry's Ultimate Cake Book

Advantages: straight forward,easy-to-follow recipes. fabulous colour photos
Disadvantages: not up-to-date

I bought this recipe book about five years ago from a cheap book outlet for about £7 and it is still one of my most frequently used cookbooks. I am a keen cook and like to try a couple of new recipes each month. This book is easy to use and because the recipes are short and to the point, I can fit them into gaps in a busy schedule. Most of the recipes have no more than 15 lines of instructions, some are shorter, very few turn over the page. Many of the recipes have a fabulous full-page colour photograph to show you how it should look - and to be fair, most of them do look like they should because this is such a clear, cookbook with good instructions. My only criticism is that this book now seems to be a bit outmoded with all the chefs and cookbooks currently around. Victoria Sandwich, Battenburg Cake, Brandy Snaps, Butterfly ...
