Studying my degree in Physiotherapy I was always out to try and find new books to aid with my studies especially anatomy revision.
There was a group of women in my class that were always buying new books with the latest information in that was all highly complicated and made very little sense to me. And so I found myself scouring through a number of online websites and bookstores attempting to find books to aid with my studies but not confuse me to boredom!
This is what I found! The Concise Book of Muscles by Chris Jarmey. It gives you a little bit more than a basic guide to the anatomy of the body but is easy to read and follow.
There is at the start a brief description of planes and axis for normal movement as well anatomical movement and explanations about the "core stability" of the body i.e. the vertebral column and thoracic/pelvic region. It then goes on to give an explanation regarding muscle attachment and isometric/isotonic contractions which is very beneficial when studying anything medical.
The book then moves on in sections working from the head downwards with pictures of the muscles and a statement of: origin, insertion, action and nerve supply. There is also information on the basic functional movement of that muscle as well as what sports activities heavily utilise the specific muscle and movements or injuries that can damage the muscle.
All this description/information is set out clearly so that it is easy to follow and flows well.
Another fantastic part of this book is that it also gives you ideas of strengthening exercises for that specific muscle as well as stretches which can give you a platform to work from when you are organising treatment plans for patients!
I would say one of the only problems with this book, which unfortunately you find with many anatomy books is that they all appear to give slightly different attachment sites of certain muscles and so you are never quite sure what book is actually correct. Another statement I would make is that it is great for your first going into your second year of study but if more knowledge is required it lacks a little bit of this. However, as a basic start to get you going it is a great book that really helps.
