"Half a Yellow Sun" is set in Nigeria in the 1960s, at the time of a vicious civil war in which a million people died, and thousands were massacred in cold blood. The three main characters in the novel get swept up in the violence during these turbulent years. One is a young boy from a poor village who is employed at a university lecturer's house. The other is a young middle-class woman, Olanna, who has to confront the reality of the massacre of her relatives. And the other is a white man, a writer who lives in Nigeria for no clear reason, and who falls in love with Olanna's sister, a remote and enigmatic character. As these people's lives intersect, they have to question their own responses to the unfolding political events. This extraordinary novel is about Africa in a wider sense: about moral responsibility, about the end of colonialism, about ethnic and tribal allegiances, about class and race; and the ways in which love can complicate all of these things.

...Having read another of PhilippaGregory's books "A ConstantPrincess" I had a look in our local library for other books by this author. This is different to ConstantPrincess (and also " The Boleyn Inheritance" which I'm currently reading) because the subject of the novel is not one of the main characters we know from history but rather an unknown Jewish girl who has converted to Christianity and has a gift of visions of the future which draws her into being a "holy fool" in the royal court. I thought this a very interesting perspective as the status of outsiders such as Jews in the Tudor period is not something I'd ever thought about before. I enjoyed the fact that the book relates the main character, Hannah's life beyond the confines of the court, and the tension for the Jewish community (as well as everyone else) during...

Advantages: Superbly written (as always), brings little-known information to light Disadvantages: I think Philippa Gregory has her favourites and I don't share her opinions
...Following on from the success of her other novels set in the Tudor court (The Other Boleyn Girl, The Queen's Fool, The Virgin's Lover), PhilippaGregory goes back in time to bring us a novel following the early life of Katherine of Aragon. In her author's note, Gregory acknowledges that a lot of the information she found was a revelation for her - especially Katherine's upbringing at the battle camps of her royal Christian crusader parents, who are determined to fight the Moors (Moslems) out of Spain.
Katherine is often portrayed as a rather boring, downtrodden woman who would rather pray than have fun and dance at court. The ConstantPrincess blows this image out of the water. Katherine is raised as Catalina, Infanta of Spain, who has been betrothed to Prince Arthur, the Rose of England, since she was a toddler. She has been brought up...
