Advantages: Funny, ingenious, well-developed characters Disadvantages: Not many, just a little short of perfection
...and an acknowledged master of the fantasy humour genre, Terry Pratchett has in fact had a couple of brief forays into the world of science fiction humour, too. The first one was Strata, an entertaining exploration of the Discworld concept before the first novel in the Discworld series, The Colour of Magic, was written. Though it was imaginative and I enjoyed reading it, Strata did lack the sparkle of his best fantasy novels. His second sci-fi novel ... ...Strata and features none of the same characters, the style is quite similar. But in writing The Dark Side of the Sun, Pratchett has taken the plot, the sci-fi element, and the writing to a new level in an infinitely superior book. The story is complex and involving, and winds a course through time and space - as did Strata - but features something that Strata didn't really have - a variety of complex, interesting, and funny characters. It doesn't ...

Advantages: Some humour. Very little, very subdued Disadvantages: Terribly written
...fair few Pratchet books in the past all of the discworld series so when I saw this book I thought it should be just as good and bought it straight away.
How wrong I was. First of all the plot. The story is about Dom who is the Chairman of the planet Widdershin and heir to a massive fortune. However, according to a concept called probability math than can predict the future the day Dom is to become Chairman he will die. However he does not die and ... ...it just seems stupid)
The book is really badly written. It's as if Pratchet came up with the idea for a story and quickly threw it together. He seems to flit between ideas that may work well in his head but unless he describes them properly don't work well on the page. Nothing is described welll, very little is explained. I thought for a while maybe this book is a sequel and we're expected to know what these things are from the previous book but ...

Advantages: more from pratchett Disadvantages: its just not discworld
...pterrys other works and love the discworld books. I saw the cover done by the artist that does most of the discworld covers and despite not finding the blurb encouraging thought i'd buy it coz, well it was a pratchett. And to be honest i wish i hadn't bothered, it has the feel of a book written quickly/in a disjointed manner, as though he had the ideas for the plot and couldn't fit them in any other way or as if to remind people that he can write ... ...of his thats not from the disc try the truckers trilogy, or jonny and the bomb, theyre much better. The elements of the story are all there but for me they didnt fall in to place, in fact some parts reminded me of the region of dejelibeybe (pyramids) but in general this was very disapointing.
Compared to others of it genre it is a very good read but when you know the authors other work its very disapointing. ...

Shady star Review ofThe Dark Side of the Sun - Terry Pratchettby

Advantages: Healthy read engrosing Disadvantages: little short, no sequels
...library loaned than bought.
The only thing about it that didnt impress me was the lack of a sequel
I mean he has so much to go on, the characters the locations, the peoples... a half the hard work is done already, all it needs is a bit of a plot (and maybe a couple of new characters) to make a follow up.
will he bring one out?
I doubt it. Good for sci-fi fans and Pratchett fans.
Easy listening sci-fi (kinda thing) ...
