Gracie and Daniel have been told to keep away from the Birdman, but they find out that he isn't mad, but keep it secret. The birdman does warn them to stay away from Samson Island because it is cursed and only he knows why. The children, however, get lost in their boat during a foggy day and land on the island . When they return home tragic news awaits them. Will they discover what the Birdman knows about Samson Island before it's too late?.
The story is set during the outbreak of World War Two and is another gem from Michael Morpurgo. Well worth reading and a good lesson in human behaviour and how fear of the unknown, or unexplained, can affect us. I find most of his books are for age 8 and over,but having said that if your child is younger and a good reader I would definately suggest it. My 7 year old loves his books. ...

when I read it to him (yes, I'm already reading to him to give him an ear for language - I don't think you can start too early with these things!).
The story is of a tiny sea snail who longs to travel the world. One day he hitches a ride with a hump-back whale & together they travel the seas visiting far off coastlines. Unfortunately the whale swims too close to a populated tourist spot & is upset by the commotion of speedboats, causing him to swim too close to the shore & become beached. As the tide slips away (sob!), the tiny snail knows he must do something to save his friend. He manages to crawl to a nearby school (OK, so the whale would be dead by now...!) & leaves a message on the blackboard with his gooey trail for the children to save the whale. The children run to the whales rescue & douse him with water until the tide comes ...
Advantages: Easy to read with lovely illustrations to follow the text. Disadvantages: None
