Earthsea Quartet

Advantages: Fantastically realised world, focused plot
Disadvantages: Minimalist detail, not a cohesive collection

The Earthsea Quartet compiles Ursula Le Guin's first four novels set in the Iron Age styled world of Earthsea. The first three books of the original trilogy were published over four years, from 1968 to 1972. A fourth book was released in 1990, erroneously subtitled the last tale of Earthsea but it ended up being the springboard for further tales.

The four books are set in the known lands of Earthsea; made up of a central archipelago ...
...outside the provided map are unknown; however a land of the dragons is speculated to exist in the far west.

Earthsea is mostly populated by a dark-browned skinned people. The white Kargs are given a slightly more barbaric presentation than other races, shown to be less literate and superstitious of the practise of magic. Different characters from different backgrounds provide much variety. The character's ignorance of other cultures ... more

Sail away with wizards, dragons and ghosts

Advantages: beautiful writing, a solid fantasy world, real insight
Disadvantages: you need time on your hands because its hard to stop reading!

Every lover of fantasy needs this book. Every parent with teenagers needs to buy it for them. This is the children's novel at its most mature and engaging, to satisfy the imagination and get them hooked on really good writing. Having said that, I'm 21 and I only read it this year and was really impressed. It reminds me of Philip Pullman with its ambition, and Tolkien with its strong moral core and epic scale. Now, I'm a Tolkien freak, so this comparison should tell you just how much I like Le Guin. Dare I say it, 'Earthsea' is actually better paced and largely better written. I love Le Guin's writing, it's rich and poetic and she really lives inside the minds of her characters. They're not two-dimensional either - they can be cruel, weak, proud. But in the end, because you know exactly what they're thinking, you sympathise with them ...

Review of The Earthsea Quartet - Ursula K. Le Guin

An Excellent Ensemble

Advantages: Well written, enjoyable
Disadvantages: Lacks the excitement of Harry Potter

The Wizard of Earthsea books are a series of four fantasy novels by Ursula K. Le Guin. The books are all written in a third-person perspective and uses an omniscient type of narration. The first three titles were written as a trilogy in the 1960s/1970s with the final book being added to make the series into a quartet in 1990. The books are set in a world named Earthsea that has some similarities to our world but also some major differences. The world is made up of groups of small islands surrounded by a vast ocean. Most of the islands are inhabited by dark skinned people, some of whom are wizards. One island, with white skinned inhabitants, is at war with the other islands. The white-skinned islanders do not believe in wizardry, thinking it to be mere lies and trickery. The wizards are looked upon as superiors by the majority ...

Review of Earthsea Quartet - Ursula K. Le Guin

Some things get better with age

Advantages: Thrilling, well paced, excellently written
Disadvantages: Not really for readers who aren't fond of indepth fantasy

When I was small, I read many books, and one of those I read when I was eight, was the first three Ursula le Guin books. They gripped me then, and ever since. A word of warning. If you do not enjoy periods of reflection in your fantasy steer away. This is no trivial piece of fantasy to be read as a light read, and certainly I would not compare it to Harry Potter. This is infinitly more complex and subtle, and for that reason, will inevitably have less fans- where Harry Potter delievers thrills and spills, and high octane emotion, Ursula le Guins work is far more thoughtful, and less showy at that. The first book is the one with which I am most acquainted, and so shall be the one I talk about the most- touching only lightly on the others I am afraid. In the Wizard of Earthsea a young goatherd called Ged, saves his village ...
