Following on from the other Elder Scrolls Games: Morrowind, Bloodmoon, Tribunal, Oblivion had an extremely hard act to follow. Morrowind received over 60 awards for its revolutionary RPG (thats Role Playing Game to the inexperienced) gameplay. Graphical feats such as Pixel Shaded water were introduced creating unrivalled realism at the time, and the world was so huge it was difficult to explore all of it in under a year. Well, that was all in the past, for Obvlivion seems to effortlessly kicks its proverbial arse.
The Story:
Basically, (for this could turn in to a full length novel), the game begins when an Emperor is fleeing through a secret passage in the prison cell you happen to be locked up in. (God knows what it is with Bethesda Softworks and prisons, but you start morrowind in one too...) Anyway, he allows you to escape along the same tunnel as him, and on the way he is ambushed by assassins. For some reason, (which i won't give away), he recognises you from his dreams, and believing that fate intends you to help him, he entrusts you with the Amulet of Kings, something only a natural, genetic heir can wear, instructing that you deliver it safely to a man named Jauffre who knows the location of a lost heir. He is then killed, and from here on in, you, as the main protagonist, find yourself performing more and more, increasingly challenging quests, whether they are subquests or the main story line. To choose either or both is your choice.
It is probably right to note in this section, that the story line is voice acted by a large and renowned cast, including the legendary actors, Patrick Stewart (Star Trek and Xmen) and Sean Bean (Lord of the Rings and Sharpe). This means it is obviously of a very high standard, and the script is very detailed and imaginitive.
Aspects of the Game:
First off, i'd like to make an appropriately big deal over the size of the world Obvlivion is set in. At it's time of release it was the second biggest in-game world ever to have been created (after Daggerfall), and correct me if i'm wrong, i think it still is. That is to say, in real time i doubt you could fully explore the entire map in under about 3 years, if that. According to Wikipedia, it consists of 16 square miles, and i should imagine this is true. All of this is full of castles, ruins, cities, towns and villages, random farm houses, lakes, hills and mountains, and within this is hidden treasure, thousands of NPCs (Non Playable Characters) with quests, rumours and advice. Tens of thousands of enemies of all sorts will attack you with ridiculously advanced AI, from moderately harmless beasts eg. crabs, to deadly assassins solely existing to kill you.
Your existence in the world of Oblivion, (called Tamriel), allows you to decide what class of character you want to be. eg. Thief, Assassin, Mage etc., and these also have sub classes, decided by your actions within the game. Your character skill is recorded my means of levels as with many RPGs, and the higher you get your major skills, the faster you level up. In order to do this quickly (well, not exactly quickly, but quicker), you can work in one of four major Guilds which will practice those skills. These are:
-the Fighters' Guild (which you'd choose if you were a warrior for example - or if you are just a naturally violent person.)
-the Thieves' Guild (does what it says on the tin, really good fun to play as, but very difficult to complete the main story)
-the Mages' Guild (create and master spells and then use them effectively for a variety of missions)
-the Dark Brotherhood (this is an assassins guild, basically executioners. They are illegal in the world of Tamriel - for obvious reasons!)
There are also many more organisations/ religious sects which the player can become involved with, such as The Blades, who are essentially agents of the Emperor.
Depending on your role in the game, your skills can include the likes of Lockpicking (which actually has an interface showing the lock so you actually do have to pick it!) and Alchemy whereby you create spells, armour and weapons from natural environment ingredients. There are loads more, too many to include without this review turning into a list!!
The combat system has also improved dramatically since Morrowind. It now uses the same physics engine as Age of Empires 3 and the latest Half-life games, meaning objects behave exactly as they would in reality, allowing for intense combat situations where you can really use your environment. A great feature of the new combat system is that you can actually block your opponents when they attack you (although the amount of damage prevented depends on your level and skill with Block), either using your shield or your sword edge. When you fire arrows, you can see them pierce their target, and they remain stuck in their target until you retrieve them! A good example of this is at the beginning when the game is teaching you archery and asks you to shoot a bucket above a well. The arrows get stuck in the bucket, and the bucket jerks around with each strike. Incredible to watch. However, the best new combat feature which mimicks reality the most, is the ability to cease a battle by talking your way out of it. For example, if you are in the middle of a fight, as you block you can try and talk to your assailant, and if he likes you enough, he will stop and the battle will be over. Very cool and novel idea.
The sound track is faithful to the original games, and is essentially a variation on the original. It is a fantastic orchestral played track perfectly suited to the game, providing appropriate backing music: exciting, tense, sad and sweeping to reflect the game and landscapes in it.
The age rating for the game is now M - Mature (it was originally T - Teen), as there is quite graphic gore and there is a patch in which you can completely remove peoples clothes, leading to potential nudity of female figures (not that i know much about that...i really don't). I think the rating is probably fair, if a little over the top, but it's not way out anyway.
The only drawer back I can think of for this game, is the fact that the PC spec requirements are so demanding. When you play the game, it is perfectly understandable, but it makes it no less frustrating for those who are missing out because of a slightly lower graphics card or processor speed. The official requirements are noted below. Another drawback is that it is so incredibly compelling. You will undoubtedly get addicted and forget about all forms of real life needs, leaving you feeling starving at about 4 in the morning when you realise it is all you've done all day!
Basically to conclude, i would say the Game is a must buy for all gamers with a good enough computer. It is available on the Xbox 360 as well as PC. You will love it even if in the past you have not been in to RPGs, simply because it is targetted at every audience, and aspects of the gameplay reflect this.
Thanks for reading, hope you liked it - don't miss the game!

Advantages: Stunning, Polished, Gigantic Disadvantages: Overwhelming, Weak Friendly Fighting AI
Four years after the critically acclaimed "Morrowind", producer Bethesda Softworks releases the fourth installment of the Elder Scrolls. It seems as if every minute was spent enriching and perfecting the award winning formula, as the flawless "Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion" will forever engrave its name in video-game history. The epitome of RPGs, the definition of gaming. It's enthralling, it's relentless. Prepare to throw your social life into Oblivion.

Fate confronts the completely user-created character with an epic quest that somehow encompasses the fate of the kingdom and/or the entire world of Cyrodill, but it is a destiny that may well be ignored. Recovering mystical artifacts, slaying vampires, assassinating royalty and shoplifting the finest stores could distract the player from delving into the evolving storyline.
It was that freedom ...

The sequel to Morrowind and the fourth in the Elder Scrolls series from Bethsheda doesn't let the gamers down at any point of the game. Advantages: Adds a whole storyline to the game, a full set of armour and more Disadvantages: Evil characters will have to repent for their sins !!
This was Bethesdas first major add on for Oblivion, they released some smaller online purchasable download contents for a few pounds each which didnt seem to take off very well, they were very small add ons such as armor for your horse, a tower for wizard characters, a pirates den, an extra dungeon with a special weapon, an observatory that required you to build and a vampires home.

Knights of the nine itself is a great storyline quest that will take at least 20 hours to complete and is very well written and entertaining.

The ElderScrollsIV: Oblivion, or more simply Oblivion, is a single player fantasy-themed action-oriented computer role-playing game developed by Bethesda Game Studios and published by Bethesda Softworks and the Take-Two Interactive subsidiary 2K Games. It is the next game in the ElderScroll Series after Morrowind and was released on Xbox 360 and PC, later followed by PS3.
Oblivion is a hard game to genre as it touches on so many aspects and types of games, it is played from a first person view, but can be put in a third person view if wished. I have to say, stick to the first person as it makes the game much more atmospheric. I'd say Oblivion is a RPG at core, you create your character at the beginning of the game and you increase and learn skills as you fight the enemies of the game.
Oblivions story is a deep and vast one ...

In a nutshell:One of the most respected Western role-playing games of all time is back with huge improvements in graphics and accessibility, including a completely real-time combat system and the largest, most detailed game world ever seen. Phew. The lowdown:Although previous Elder Scrolls games have enjoyed something of a like it or loathe it reputation, this latest sequel has the means to appeal to everyone thanks to one simple improvement: its incredible new graphics. Unlike many role-playing games it is viewed from a first person perspective, with a game world portrayed in a staggering amount of detail, and realistic psychics and characters that genuinely seem to be going on about their own separate lives. The game's real appeal though lies in the huge freedom: play it exactly how you want. Most exciting moment:Using the new combat engine to fight off dozens of enemies, then stealing one of their mounts and riding off into the sunset.Since you ask:Emperor Uriel Septim VII is voiced by Star Trek and X-Men luminary Patrick Stewart, but all the characters in the game have full spoken voiceovers instead of just onscreen text. This is the next generation, you know. The bottom line:One of the most realistic and accessible role-playing games ever made.Harrison Dent After the mysterious and untimely death of the Emperor, the throne of Tamriel lies empty. With the Empire ready to crumble, the gates of Oblivion open and demons march upon the land-laying waste to everything in their path. To turn the tide of darkness, you must find the lost heir to the throne and unravel the sinister plot that threatens to destroy all of Tamriel.Live Another Life in Another World: Create and play any character you can imagine, from the noble warrior to the sinister assassin to the wizened sorcerer. Next Generation Graphics: Pixel-shader effects and high definition televisions are fully supported to create unprecedented visuals, including lifelike towns, dungeons, and the most realistic forests ever created in a game.
