I'm pretty sure that you all know about this game, and you've all probably heard all the great comments about and read all the positive reviews. But still, it's my first review, so here it is.
BASIC INFO Skyrim is the fifth game in the Elder Scrolls series, made by the game company Bethesda, who also made the amazing Fallout series. It is an open world Role Playing Game with a huge environment and hundreds of quests to do. You can choose to follow the main storyline all the way through, or you can just wander off and explore the world, helping out anyone you come across on your journey.
STORY The game starts out with you being taken to a city called Helgan, where you are to be executed. While there, you create your character and choose his or her race and appearance. It soon comes to be your turn on the chopping block, and you walk up to face your execution, when a dragon appears out of nowhere and goes on a rampage, destroying houses and starting fires. You manage to escape the town with the aid of either the Imperials or the Stormcloaks, depending on who you choose during their standoff. You then learn that you are a Dragonborn, a being with the power to use their voice to attack and manipulate others, and you must use these powers to defeat the dragons, who are somehow returning to Skyrim, even though they were defeated by a group called the blades centuries ago. It is a very interesting story and will take you through twists and turns, and all over the huge province of Skyrim, eventually ending in the final battle for Skyrim with the 'king' of the dragons, Alduin.
GRAPHICS If you have played this game or seen any kind of game play videos of it, then you will know that this game has some of the best, detailed graphics i have seen in any game i have ever played. The amount of hard work that must have gone into this game really shows in the presentation, as it is top notch. The weather effects look great, the different towns, weapons and characters look great, and the environment is unbelievable and looks like it is real. The next time you play Skyrim, climb to a huge mountain like the throat of the world, and look down. It is AMAZING.
GAMEPLAY If it sounds like i love this game, it's because i do, and the gameplay just adds even more reasons to my list of why you should buy this game. Skyrim is a free roaming open world adventure game, where a lot of the time you will be travelling around the huge world, fighting creatures, looking for castles or raider hideouts to scavenge some cool items or just taking in the sights as you travel around. Right after you complete your first quest, you are free. You are literally allowed to do anything you want in Skyrim, and the game will not stop you or hinder you in any way. You could all of a sudden just ditch your current quest, no matter where you are or how far you've progressed, and run off and explore freely. You can get married, buy a nice house, decorate it with furniture, and then live with your wife, who will give you money every day from her day's income. You can even choose, if you're feeling like some action, decide to kill almost every person in a town and steal all their things, so long as you're ready for a fight with the guards, who will either kill you or send you to prison, unless you've got enough gold to pay for your bail. As i mentioned before, however, not all of the characters in Skyrim are kill-able, as they are important to the story. This does mean that you will have to just flee from these people or hope that they forgive you, or you will be trying to kill them for a very long time. Although it can seem a little annoying, the game does do it for a reason, as if you end up killing everyone who can give you a main quest in the story, you won't finish the game or get much longevity or enjoyment out of it. Talking of longevity, for a final point, this game is very long, there are hundreds, and i mean hundreds of quests to do, and they will take you a very long to complete. I am currently on level 30 something and have put in around 50 hours of gameplay into Skyrim, and i don't think i'm even close to finishing it any time soon.
OVERALL THOUGHTS If you do not have Skyrim, get it. If you are wondering if you should get Skyrim, yes, you should. If you own Skyrim, then stop reading this review and play it! It is too good to put into words (although somehow I've managed to put it into over 800 words). Everything about this game is great, and it really is deserving of game, not just of the year, but of the decade. Well done hugely to Bethesda for making this game. Get it now!
