Breastflow bottles have been round for a few years now, I used them when I was mixed feeding my son, shortly before we switched to formula full time. I came upon these by chance, through freecycle, (now freegle) and figured I'd give them a whirl. At that time I was using Tommee Tippee Close to nature bottles and they just weren't working for us, and my son had a serious case of nipple confusion, getting less and less interested in breastfeeding, this was a last ditch attempt before giving up completely as my milk supply had reduced dramatically since first introducing the bottle at 2 weeks old. Unfortunately for us, by that time (7 weeks old) it was too late and a week later we were using formula full-time. These really helped with his wind in the early days. I bought more of them and we still used Breastflow among other types until he was about 7 months old, after that we just used the other types. I didn't see the point in keeping them as we were no longer mixed feeding and he was happy using the other bottles so I put them on freecycle.
The Breastflow website states:
Breastflow 's patented 2-in-1 nippple lets your baby control the flow of breast milk or formula as naturally as breastfeeding. By using both suction and compression motions, your baby is able to regulate the flow of milk unlike any other bottle.
Plus, Breastflow is designed to help prevent colic. Moms who participated in an independent in-home bottle feeding research study said their babies experienced reduced colic symptoms such as less gas, spit-up or fussiness when using Breastflow.
I found this statement to be true for the most part as it definitely helped with his wind, meaning we didn't have to use infacol or gripe water. However after 6 months this became a moot point due to him moving around more which helped to get rid of his wind too.
These have a good capacity. Babies tummies, are so tiny, especially in the first few months that they don't need much milk to begin with. These ones lasted until he was about 4 months old before we bought bigger Breastflow bottles.
These are easy to clean. You just need a bottle brush OR you can put them straight in the dishwasher, though I used to give them a whizz round with a bottle brush just in case before putting them in. I preferred to sterilise them in cold water with a liquid sterilising solution as this ensured they were sterilised right up until I took them out to make up a bottle.
Wear and tear
These are sturdy bottles and they could handle the high heats from the dishwasher and the teats never got damaged. We never tried them in the microwave as we used cold water sterilising and it's not recommended that you heat bottles in the microwave.
Value for money
They are one of the more expensive brands, however the 2-in-1 teat is patented to they are the only bottles to offer this, I found they are the closest bottles to the breast and the way they work means the baby is less likely to suffer with wind (of course this can never be 100%). They were definitely worth the money for us, as despite giving up breastfeeding when he was 8 weeks old they really helped where other bottles hadn't in reducing the wind he suffered from.
Would I recommend? Yes.
