The Folio Society

... They use our laziness and their insidious editor's choices and minimum orders to wring as much money from us as possible. We often end up with a shelf full of books that we do not really want. Bah. Sometimes, book clubs send us "club editions" printed on cheap, nasty paper and with spines ... Read review

Posh Books Inc

Advantages: Beautiful books, good service, super introductory offers.
Disadvantages: Expensive books, smallish catalogue with too many books on empire.

...with spines that break on the first reading. Bah again. After the introductory offer and by the time we have paid for postage, book club books are not always that cheap, either. Thrice bah.

The Folio Society is not like this.

You may have seen their adverts in the broadsheet weekend supplements. Folio run excellent introductory offers. Otherwise, you will need to look at their website – address at the end – to give them ...
...is that Folio are publishers. The books you will buy will be Folio editions and Folio editions are unlike most books you find in Waterstones. These are upmarket volumes. They have properly sewn bindings – some books are leather, some silk, some blocked and illustrated woven cloth. Each book comes in its own slipcase. Each book has a Folio-commissioned introduction from authors, academics and the like. Each book has new illustrations, from some of ... more

No Ordinary Book Club

Advantages: The books are of a unique standard
Disadvantages: There are only about 400 titles available

I’ve always been of the “just as long as I can read it” school of thought when it comes to books – dirty, moth-eaten, broken-spined books are all fine and dandy with me as long as they’ve got something interesting to say. Paperbacks tend to come and go from my hands as the good ones are lent out to friends and the bad ones get taken straight back to the Oxfam from whence they generally came. That’s me. Not so my lovely husband, oh no. He is of the ...
...the book when reading it so it doesn’t get damaged” school of thought. I would clearly be well within my rights to make some rather hackneyed joke about him reading a book by its cover, but luckily for you I wouldn’t stoop so low. So can you guess what I’ve got him for Christmas yet? ***************************************************** Well I can’t believe I hadn’t thought of it before, but this coming year hubby will be a fully paid up member ...

Oh how i love the folio society. i love them and yet at the same time, i hate them. Dont get me wrong, i dont hate them because they provide poor quality books and have bad service...no no no. i hate them because i cannot resist thier fantastic books! THE COSTS The cost per book can range from about £19 to anything up to/and over £100. generally most books cost about £25/£30. Awesome

Advantages: Fantastic introdutory offer, very good quality
Disadvantages: Very expensive

...books, very high quality, but the price isn't within everybody's budget, I do encourage anybody reading this to visit the website first. I joined, got the books I wanted and left again, simply because the choice isn't that great, there was only a few book from their entire range I wanted so that's all I got. The books I did get were fantastic though, the Oxford Dictionary, World Atlas, Greek Myths even the Devils Dictionary. It's not what it sounds ...
...entertaining none the less. Overall: ok selection, high price, the obligation is a bit much to ask for in just a month, but worth it (I spent £274.75, in a month) The type of books they offer is interesting, they do reference books, fiction, history, philosophy, religion, poetry, art, they even have their own 'Folio series', I don't think the books would be suitable for children but some would be nice as a 'bedtime story, like their Fairytales ...

If ancient Rome had tabloids...

Advantages: A look into the personal lives of the early Caesars
Disadvantages: Overlooks some important events in favour of personal tales

time went on, his conduct justified every line they had written.' Graves' edition of Suetonius is available under many covers, from hard-back study editions to Penguin paperbacks, including a wonderful, finely printed edition by the Folio Society. Michael Grant, one of the more prolific and popular of historians to write on ancient Rome, also has several editions of this Suetonius text. Take a step back into the seemier side of ancient Rome, the side most history courses overlook in favour of more traditional historical events, and hie thee to the bookstore for this work. ...

Murder Most Foul

Advantages: Intelligent, accessible writing, great storytelling.
Disadvantages: Hmmm @ Thomas More.

thing. Life lost young diminishes us all for the young form our future. We need them. And I think we are never satisfied until we achieve closure on the deaths of children. We need, more than we need anything, to know why and how a child died. I doubt this story will ever go away. Weir's book is a rattling good read, perhaps appealing most to those who enjoy historical fiction but are looking to move on to something a little more authoritative but that is still engaging and interesting. It is not a heavy book either in style or in length. Just a little more than two hundred pages long, it's noted well with good acknowledgement to sources, yet it is never dry. My copy is a jolly posh Folio Society edition with a super foreword by Ruth Rendell, but you can buy it from Amazon, published by Pimlico, for the princely (groan) sum of seven ...

Pootering

Advantages: Sheer delight
Disadvantages: None

. While Pooter repeats his "very funny" word-plays for all to enjoy over again, the Grossmiths take similar Woodehousian pleasure in their character names: Lupin Pooter, Mr Perkupp, Mr Crowbillion and Murray Posh all sheer brilliance which pales beside the truly magnificent: Florence Singleyett. With diary entries sometimes as short as a paragraph it's a book that can be dipped into at any time, but with the whole at a little under 150 pages* it is also one to take at a sitting. However you to take it, it is one to be enjoyed and savoured?and returned to. Perfect. ~ My edition is the Folio Society 1969 copyright, 15th printing 2003 edition - with an introduction signed only JH, and line drawings by John Lawrence. (Not currently listed on their website so no current price available). Penguin Classic paperback edition has ...
