There are a lot of books that you can purchase on the subject of genealogy reference and knowing which one to buy is not easy. If you are interested in genealogy reference then you will know that there is literally a wealth of information out there. Choosing the correct book for you is not easy. With Christmas coming up if you know someone who likes to research their family history then this would be the ideal gift. Now all you need to know is contained in one well put together book that will take you on a journey and teach you all you need to know about researching your family history on the internet.
Peter Christian has written a comprehensive book that covers everything you need to know from beginner knowledge to advanced. The book is chronological in format with the most recent references of internet resources and the record offices/agencies available. The book takes an open look at agencies and is not biased in any way. Unlike other books I have read this book shows no bias whatsoever and is very easy to read.
Whilst the book remains unbiased it also points out the negative aspects of receiving information from different sites, as not being valid without being verified manually from record offices. A lot of the time information is not checked and inaccurate details result in genealogical compilations. Peter Christian mentions these errors throughout the book. I tend to agree that there are a lot of inaccuracies on the internet that you do have to be careful about. Whilst a lot of information can be a good thing when you don't know if it is valid then it can be like that old game Chinese Whispers.
This book covers a large area of the science of looking into family history. Although it is not over scientific it does research the area of family history well. It never uses too many scientific words which is a good thing because it makes it easy to read and well written. It is a great book for reference and a book that most family history researchers would benefit from. It is a good book for anyone 's book case that is interested in Genealogy.
The book contains a lot of internet resources that any genealogist would benefit from. Peter Christian has a website that includes updated links that have been changed since it was first printed. All the information is up to date and relevant. One thing you can be sure of is that there is a lot of information that will appeal to the beginner or expert. Peter Christian teaches you how to access the vast amount of information available on the world wide web. You do need a little basic knowledge on how to use the internet, but not too advanced. You can always get someone to help you. It is a down to earth book that isn't too complicated or scientific. Peter Christian, the author of this book is also a Fellow of London's Society of Genealogogists.
The book is illustrated well throughout and is well presented. There is a great section that is particularly interesting for those who want to start putting their Family Tree on-line. It teaches you the practicalities and the netiquette of how to get your Family Tree started on-line. This is a particularly useful section where you will learn how to draw attention to your Family Tree, how to exchange information with other users, remote relations and other researchers. This part of the book was probably my favourite part as it covered the bits that I am most interested in like how to develop your Family Tree.
The internet has greatly improved the world of Genealogy and this book helps you to understand and educate so that you can explore the world of Genealogy on-line as well. If you have no knowledge of the internet then it can seem daunting and as if there is too much information that is weighing you down. This book helps to reduce the time you would spend if you didn't have any information and also helps you to research more fully into your Family Tree. This book really is a gem of information and I would definitely recommend this book.
