As you can probably tell by the amount of book reviews that I post, I am an avid reader, and I do like to try a wide range of books and authors. I tend to stick to the chick-lit genre, although I do stray occasionally, but there is plenty of books in my preferred genre to keep me busy! I'm terrible in that if I don't like a book, I don't usually go back to that author. One such book was PS, I Love You by Cecelia Ahern - I hated it. But when I saw her new Christmassy looking book in the library, I thought it was worth one last try with her material.
Lou lives in Dublin, is happily married to Ruth with 2 children and has a highly paid architects job. But the one thing Lou needs more of is time. He works all the hours god sends, has been known to have the odd affair which he's hidden from his wife, and his work/life balance isn't too good. Lou decides to do someone a good turn and employs the homeless man from the street Gabe. But Gabe soon unsettles Lou, appearing to be in 2 places at once and seemingly following Lou around. But is he to be the one to teach Lou a very important lesson about time and what is the most important thing to him? This story shows us how people are just like parcels - lots of layers that need peeling away to uncover just what is inside.
This story definitely is a modern day fairytale style book, with a good storyline and a lot of magic thrown into the mix to create something unique and very different to most of the other chick-lit out there. Cecelia Ahern seems to like using the impossible in her stories, as in PS I Love You where a dead man communicated with his wife from beyond the grave, and this novel also explores a magical element too. Gabe can seemingly move quicker than is humanly possible, and the reason for this is intriguing and something it took a while to get my head around as I was reading. But credit to Ahern here, because I can't normally stand unrealistic books, yet this one drew me in immediately and I just couldn't put it down, so much so I actually read it in just over a day - I was desperate to find out how it was all going to come together at the end.

The Christmas theme immediately comes into play with talk of christmasses gone by, presents and dinners, and then she managed to relate this to the story as well, which I thought was great! Another enjoyable part for me was the way the story itself was actually told. It begins on a whole different tangent, with a youth in a police station and meeting Raphie, who comes to be our narrator for the rest of the novel. In order to teach the offending boy a lesson, Raphie wants to tell him a moral story, and this is where our story with Lou begins. We do go back to Raphie interminently throughout the book, and I really enjoyed this reading experience. The story takes many twists and turns along the way, keeping me interested all through the book, and I so much loved the writing style of Ahern - being told in the third person worked so well for this book and allowed me just to become absorbed in the unfolding story.
Ahern has managed to create a real broad range of characters within this story, someone to appeal to any reader and they all work so well within the story itself. Lou was the most complex character, clearly trying to be everything to everyone, and not quite achieving. I found it hard to like him because of how he put his work ahead of his family, but still his story was fascinating. My favourite character by far was the elusive Gabe, the man who seemed almost ethereal and a fantasy type character, and I was utterly charmed by him. He is almost a parallel of Lou, being everything he isn't, yet you can yourself see the lesson he's trying to teach Lou, although he does take a while to cotton on! The friendship between the men is slow in development but a real joy to read, and Ahern clearly very much into writing human relationships and dynamics, as this really shows throughout the book.
Considering I took such a dislike to this author debut novel, I cannot recommend this book enough to people! It was a joy to read from start to finish, and really had me sitting and thinking as I turned the final few pages. It is really a moral story, with a bit of magic thrown in to cheer it up, but come the ending everything comes together in a quite shocking ending which really made me sit up and reread what I had just read! Ahern seems to have the ability to create a magical world on paper which you can visualise yourself so deeply that you are thrown so deeply into the story, you want to keep reading right until the end all in one go! The shiny snowflake cover allows this book to be a great Christmas gift as well as a book that is going to be great to bring out for Christmas again and again. I borrowed by copy from the library but will getting myself a copy as soon as its out in paperback. Highly recommended, I absolutely loved it - this is one book that will stay with me for a long, long time. I cannot praise this highly enough!

The Gift is the latest novel from Cecelia Ahurn and I do believe one of her best. I have read all of Ahurns works to date but felt that P.S I Love You, her first novel, was always the best. However since reading this latest edition to her collection have quickly changed my mind.
The book is on sale now for around the £7 region in Woolworths or Tesco and it looks just like a little Christmas present as it comes with ... ...of the book are printed just like silver Christmas wrapping paper. Just looking at the book makes you want to buy it!!!

Advantages: Very Well Written. Disadvantages: Start is a bit confusing.
This is the third novel of Cecelia Ahern's that I have read and, while PS I Love You was probably my favourite, this is still a very good book.
This book is about Lou Suffern, a workaholic who seems to put his work, meetings and colleagues before anything else. His family seem to be way down at the bottom of his priorities. On his way into work one day, he stops to speak to Gabe, a homeless man and he becomes intrigued as Gabe seems to know more ... ...manages to be everywhere in the office at one time, Lou starts to become suspicious and resentful of Gabe - he wonders if Gabe is out to get his job.
This book is set around Christmas time, when people put family first. Lou doesn't and Gabe warns him to do so before it is too late. There is a message in this book for everybody.

Advantages: Keeps you hooked Disadvantages: The ending
...captivated by this story, but the end just left me feeling a little bit deflated. It starts off with a young lad throwing a frozen turkey through someone's window on Christmas morning (that window belongs to his Dad and his 'new family' but this really doesn't have anything to do with the main bulk of the book). The actual story begins while the 'turkey boy' is at the police station, and the sergeant feels it necessary to teach this boy a lesson ... ...rushing from one place to the next, constantly on the go. He never really has time for anybody but himself and puts more effort into his job and gaining that all important promotion, rather than spending time with his wife and two young children. Anyway, he meets a homeless man called Gabe, who he actually ends up giving a job (only in the mailroom at his company, but still a job). So as the book progresses you go on a journey with Lou and he starts ...

...I just could not put the book down, I was constant being told by my other half "I get more attention from the dog than I do you".
Cecilia has a way with words that entices you to keep reading this fantastic novel. You can almost feel the magic and excitement reading it as most probably Cecilia Ahern had writing this amazing book.
Her book is festive with an unexpected twist at the end. I shall not give too much away but this is an excellent book ...
