"The Giraffe and the Pelly and me."
As well as the - naturally - wonderful words (this is Roald Dahl remember!!) we also have some fantastic drawings from the magic pen of Quentin Blake. So while reading to the child you can also take time to study the pictures together. One more thing - and this dear reader may surprise you - in this Roald Dahl book there are NO grizzly murders and no obnoxious adults - and yet it is still good fun!!!!!
The 'me' in the story Billy, is the narrator of the tale. The giraffe is "a Geraneous Giraffe and a Geraneous Giraffe cannot eat anything except the pink and purple flowers of the Tinkle-tinkle tree" and the Pelly is a pelican who has a special beak in fact "You'll never seen a beak so fine,", well so says Pelly.
The story starts with an old shop - or "Grubber" (which it seems was actually an old English name for a sweet shop). Billy used to walk past this building with the large sign on advertising it "For Sail", and dream of buying it to turn back into a sweet shop selling only the sorts of sweets that Dahl could imagine - sweets like Sherbet Suckers, Caramel Fudge, Russian Toffee, Sugar Snorters, Butter Gumballs, Scarlet Scorchdroppers, Gumtwizzlers, Fizzwinkles, Frothblowers, Spitsizzlers, Liplickers and Plushnuggets.
Then one day Billy saw that the sign on the shop had been changed to "Soled" and there seemed to be much activity going on inside. All sorts of strange things were hurled from the windows onto the street below as the new owners worked inside. When Billy noticed that the old front door had been replaced by a new one that was twice as long and that there was a new sign with the words "The Ladderless Window-Cleaning Company"on the building , he couldn't contain himself any longer, he had to knock to find out what was happening.
What he found there were three new friends, three rather unusual friends - a giraffe, a pelican and a monkey - together these three had formed the "The Ladderless Window-Cleaning Company"
"We're a fabulous crew, We know just what to do, And we never stop work to drink tea. All your windows will glow When we give them a go, The Giraffe and the Pelly and me!"
Lets face it - who needs ladders when you have a giraffe whose "neck can stretch terribly high, Much higher than the eagles can fly" ?
Who needs to carry heavy buckets of water around when you have a pelican with a "special beak" well capable of carrying water in?
Added to that there is also the monkey who will "polish your glass Till it's shining like brass And it sparkles like the sun on the sea!"
This then is the start of a riotous adventure for "The Giraffe and the Pelly and me." Oh and monkey!!
Read the book to see what happens when the company get a job to clean the windows of the richest man in the country at Hampshire House.
Will the team manage to clean all the 677 windows?
What distractions will there be for them?
Well I'm not going to tell you so you are just going to have to read the book yourself!!
This book is available in both paper back and hard back - our copy is paper back which has 80 wonderful pages in it, it is presently available on Amazon from 1p.
This really is a little classic, ideal for children to read themselves as it is not too long and has some great pictures. But for me it's as a book for parents to read to their children - or with their children - where it is best enjoyed. If you are lucky enough to have a child young enough to read to I must recommend that you read this one to them.
The book ends with the lovely thought ....
"All you do is to look At a page in this book Because that's where we always will be. No book ever ends When it's full of your friends The Giraffe and the Pelly and me."
Oh it's no good, I'm going to have to tie Jack to his bed and read it to him !!!!!

Just around the corner from where Billy lives is an amazingly high and thin building. The bottom floor used to be a “Grubber” or sweet shop, but now the building is empty and dilapidated with a big “For Sail” sign in the window. It stayed like this for many a while until one day the sign was changed to “Soled” and a flurry of ... ...fitting came sailing out of the window to be dumped in favour of whatever new might be being installed within. And then one day Billy noticed that the old front door had been replaced by a new one that was easily twice the size in length, there was also a new shop sign which proclaimed “The Ladderless Window-Cleaning Company” where apparently you could “Get your windows cleaned without a lot of dirty ladders leaning against your house”. Billy was ...

...Roald Dahl books.
I selected the thinnest at approximately 71 pages long and went off to bed.
I was very tired but I found the book so amusing I could not put it down.
Illustrated wonderfully by Quentin Blake just the glorious drawings kept me awake.
The story begins with the dreams of little Billy, looking at this wonderful tall building called a Grubber. - known to Billy as a sweetshop, well that is what his mother had told him. Then odd things ... ...inquisitive and gets to meet the new owners - The Giraffe, the Pelican and the Monkey. They have their own business and ask Billy for help.
This marvellous short story develops into an adventure that any little boy would enjoy - or girl for that matter. We learn about the special abilities of these incredible creatures and how they make their business work. Like most of us in life we find that sometimes fate deals a good hand and this is what happens ...

...sweet shop. We never learn the name of the main character, who also acts as a narrator, which lends the book a magical air - any child reading it can imagin themselves in the position of 'me' and make the story their own.
We meet the Giraffe and the Pelly, and the monkey who is also in the story as they offer a window cleaning service. the giraffe is the ladder, the pelican's beak the bucket, and the monkey does the cleaning. But they are magic. ... ...and the pelican can retract the top section of his beak, so he doesn't have to fly with it open. and the monkey is a great cleaner. they are a winning team. and they are employed at a big house to clean the windows, but they also end up helping out when the house is burgled... I won't spoil the details of that though!
This is a great book. Easy to read for children learning to read, and enjoyable for all the family. The story is enchanting, and ...

I would recommend this for all age groups and fancy reading it again myself. The imagination this book presents when reading is amazing. If you are not a big reader this has been made into an animated movie and is a good take on the book my children have it and love it.

What else could a giraffe with an extending neck, a pelican with an expanding beak and an athletic little monkey be but The Ladderless Window-Cleaning Company? When this trio are invited to clean all the 677 windows belonging to the Duke of Hampshire, it is no wonder that they have adventures.
