Advantages: Good battles that are fast and furious, character depth beyond anything ive read before. Disadvantages: onto the 8th book now, might be getting slightly same-y
I have read all 8 of SimonScarrows Roman Legion books and i would say this is definetly in the top 3! We have come to love Cato and Macro on their struggle through Gaul, Britain and Syria. For me the first two books were the best, its where we got to learn about Cato and Macro and their backgrounds, but now we see that Cato is no longer the scared boy he used to be, in many ways he is older than his veteran friend Macro.
Macro simply see's a battle as a brawl, but relies on Cato to be the brains of the operation. In this book we see the pair in a struggle agaisnt the Parthians, defending the city Palmyras, a key stronghold in a political struggle, and already in revolt. Macro and Cato mustdefend the city from both itself and the parthians.
I have read many Roman historical books and i find the way Scarrow distinguishes between ...
Advantages: best in all means Disadvantages: nothing
This movie then one i saw more than fifty to sixty times, this historic movie is based on the habit of having gladiators(actuallly the slave but brave men) to fight with the animals in larger galaries in anciant romen empire.Estimations are that there were more than 100 gladiator schools (ludi) throughout the empire. The schools had barracks for the gladiators with small cells and a large training ground. The most impressive had seating for spectators to watch the men train ...

Advantages: Superb historical fiction set in a tubulent time Disadvantages: None
I have struggled in recent years to find any new authors who can write a decent series of books in which characters develop, it was a struggle I should say until I brought SimonScarrow?s Centurion in 2008. Suddenly I had found an author who could write on a historical subject and really make it seem that he knew what he was writing about, and as a result I sought out the other seven books in the Eagle series. The first of these is ?Under the Eagle?.
Before I say more about this particular book, I will give some background information, as it may put some people off or it may intrigue people. The basis premise of the series of books is centred on the careers of Lucius Cornelius Macro and Quintus Licinius Cato. Macro is a centurion with some fifteen years service under the Roman Eagle standard, whilst Cato is the son of a released slave ...
