This book has to be my favourite book by Richard Laymon so far. It begins with a murder of a husband and the kidnapping of a wife which is very gripping and kept me on the edge of my seat and i was quite shocked when the kidnapper ended up dead as you believe the story is all about him and his evil deeds. The story changes somewhat as the girl who was kidnapped finds herself rescued by a very strange man on an old school bus full of shop dummies. Again the story did not go where i was expecting as he never intends her any harm. The driver takes her to a small roadside town with a population of six, and you just know from the start that there is something going on with the people living there. The story then changes to a young man who is highjacked and they begin a murder spree, meeting up with a young woman on the way. The highjacker , Duke, and the owner of the car, Norman, have a very strange relationship and the girl that joins them obviously has no morals. You start off feeling incredibly sorry for Norman but that soon evaporates when you know that he could get himself out of the tight spot by driving off. Eventually the three of them end up at the town that the girl is at after being rescued by the same man and his bus. They decide that they want to run the town and that is were the mayhem really starts, the girl - Pamela - escapes and Norman runs after her where she finally gets him to admit he has done wrong, she lets him in on the fact that the town serves customers people that they have killed. Norman finally fights back against Duke and Boots and you feel like screaming 'finally' at him but things dont work out and the three of them end up on the grill and in the fridge in the diner. This book was a fantastic read and i really did not want to put it down, There are some icky bits which add to the book. Although cannabalism is not a very nice thing to think about, i actually found myself fine with it and thought that the small town sounded like a wonderful place to live. I found myself getting very annoyed at the weakness of Norman and his inability to stand up to the other two and walk away and Boots just got on my nerves which made for a great read as there should always be characters that move you or anger you which is definatly something that this book does. If you have the inclination to read this book i definatly suggest that you do so as i believe all Laymon fans, and those who are not, will enjoy this book over and over again.

Advantages: Another brillian book by this author Disadvantages: Not keen on ending
...laymon (the cellar, island and the stake) has done a brilliant job up until the end which i thought was poor. The glory bus was brought out in 2005 and you can get it at most major bookshops for about £6.99. You could probably get in cheaper on the net. The book revolves around two main characters. Theres pamela who has just got married, kidnapped by rodney, a rapist and murderer who has had a crush on her since school. Then there's shy, quiet norman ... ...car demanding a ride.
The book kicks off with rodney kidnapping pamela, leaving a female corpse to take her place in her house, with her husband and setting it on fire. Nobody will realize that pamela has been kidnapped, they will mistake the corpse for her. Pamela manages to escape after being saved by a man driving an old bus, who shoots rodney in the head. She helps the bus driver (sharpe) to dispose of rodneys body and then boards the bus. . ...

Advantages: A Fun Laymon Book Disadvantages: Not a Classic Laymon Book
...does feel a little like the story lacks direction, and some random encounters (Didi being an example) which I felt didn't really add to the story.
It is still a very fun read, and I won't spoil the story too much at all but it has all the gore that you come to expect from one of Laymon's books, particularly the diners "soylent" menu.
As always, the erotic elements are ever present although perhaps a little too much details when it comes to the ...

The storyline in this book was very gripping and doesn't fail to deliver a different storyline to wot you think is actually going to happen. The characters are strong and i think that this is a believable book, with many high school infatuations happening everyday ...

One moment Pamela is a newly-wed with a loving husband and a comfortable home. The next, she's the prisoner of a killer who has lusted after her since high school - and now intends to make her his slave. Norman wouldn't say boo to a goose, so he's never going to throw bad-boy Duke out of his car or say no to Boots, the hyper-sexed hitch-hiker who tags along for the ride. Together the lawless pair take him on a wild journey that looks like it's heading straight for the electric chair. But when the glory bus comes along there's hope of salvation for all. Pamela and Norman are just two who climb on board. They don't know their destination is the furnace heat of the Mojave Desert, where a special welcome awaits the weary traveller. It can't be worse than what's gone before. Or can it? See all Product Description

Stephen King's claim to fame ; Superb atmosphere ; Sublime plot ; A vivid imagination that stretches all supernatural boundaries ; Probably responsible for some of the best horror films of the 70's and 80's
Some unessesary background in the first half ; Kubrik mucked up the story too much ; Could have been much more (*)
The writing is taut and effecive, and several stand alone scenes are magnificent. The conclusion, had it been published as a stand alone novella, would have been wonderful.
Nothing happens, and there is some nasty use of forced incest as a means to create a tawdry shock. Oh, and nothing happens. (*)
