As a huge Francis Ford Coppola fan, and an avid supporter of the Godfather Trilogy, it would have been rude not to buy this game in my opinion! As well as that; because I bought the game on the weekend after it was released I was lucky enough to get a special edition tin case with it, styled to be like a coffin for your game with faux silk lining and a nice black finish!
Apart from undying love for everything Godfather, I was certain this would be sure fire hit after absolutely adoring the PC game "Mafia" which was released in 2002, which boasted awesome gameplay, great graphics and very original storyline.
So enough of the chit chat...on with the review!:
~~~~~Game Format~~~~~ So you wanna be the Don, well you've gotta work at it! This game brings you in on 1945 New York where a number of Mafia families run the crime in the city. You start off as a lowly outsider and must work you way up through the ranks of soldier to eventually become Don of NY. Its a third person action game and you control you characters movements through out the game. It is quite similar to other action games in the way that you are given a free map to roam, but there are certain locations you must go to in order to pick up missions and objectives in order to progress through the story.
In this case the story starts you as a poor orphan, because your parents are murdered by some criminals, but luckily for you Don Corleone (Marlon Brando from the hit movies) takes you under his wing. The storyline missions you encounter all integrate into the storyline of the Godfather movie, for example you have to go and cut off the horses head and put it in the film directors bed, and you have to guard Don Corleone when he is in hospital. All of the missions follow the film very accurately and at the beginning and end of them you are given cut scenes which are just CG reconstructions of scenes from the film. Something I thought was very well done.
The more missions you do the more money you make and respect you earn, thus enabling you to grow through the ranks, purchase better weapons and buy safe houses where you can save your games progress. Also with this money you can buy new clothes to dress up you character to make him look the part, which I will discuss later.
Once you complete the storyline missions, do not fear there is still more exciting stuff to come as you can still roam the areas of New York, taking over businesses and rackets by extorting the current owners, by intimidating with you gangster prowess or maybe showing them the hard side of your shot gun!
The format of this game is one that has been very successfull in the past and will continue to be successfull in the future. It boasts a long and exciting story line aspect, as well as the free roaming ability, both of which are very enjoyable and engrossing
~~~~~Controls~~~~~
Compared to alot of the action games I have played on the PC, the control configuration was fairly new to me. I am generally a FPS (first person shooter) kinda guy, but as this is a 3rd person action game there were bound to be differences. Its got the usual suspects of;
w=forward s=backwards a=sidestep left d=sidestep right
but then it also adds in q and e, as controls for each hand, so when you go to fight someone with your fists (a must for any wannabe Don) you have ultimate control of how you pummel someone. You can give them a couple of left jabs and then hold shift and give them a ferocious knock out punch to finish them off. This control style was new to me and took a little getting used to, but it is definitely a bonus with regards to controling your player. Apparently this style of control is used alot in PC games which are orginally developed for consoles such as PS2 and X-box.
Other controls include: Directional arrows= camera control Talk/action= spacebar Reveal/conceal weapon= r/h Reload= r Select weapon= 1-0 Previous/next weapon=mouse wheel Lock on target= right mouse Use weapon= left mouse Quick H2H (hand to hand) attack= q,w,e Powerful H2H attack = Shift +q,w,e Grab= Hold left and right mouse Strangle= whilst in grab; X Lift to feet= whilst in grab; s Drag/slam= whilst in grab; a,w,s,d Throw over ledge= whilst in grab; w Garrotte= Behind enemy; hold right and left mouse Place dynamite= p Free aim shooting= alt Execute= v Crouch=c Sprint= hold shift and w Vault object= space Take cover behind wall/object= CAPS lock Pause= Esc Notepad= N
The driving in game is fine, its no better or worse than other non-driving based games, however they could definiteley try to vary how well the cars accelerate/turn, depending on the vehicle, because all of the vehicles are pretty similar at the moment
Drivingcontrols: Enter/exit vehicle= space Steer= a,d Accelerate= w Brake/reverse= s Handbrake= right mouse Horn= left mouse Move camera= mouse Rear view= V/F Change Camera= alt
~~~~~Gameplay~~~~~
Because of its console background, The Godfather has a very enjoyable and playable feel to it. You can run around and fully control your characters actions. Its easy to handle once you get used to it but occasionally even I get frustrated when you trying to peak round the wall but it suddenly spins the camera to face the wrong direction because of the sensitivity of the mouse. If anything I think that they should possibley try and reduce the complexity of the controls, which although would cause a loss in your ability to control the character, it might make it easier for first timers to grasp the overall control of the game.
With regards to the combat gameplay, its very good indeed. You have the abiltiy to duck behind objects, back up against walls to peak round corners, conceal your weapons as not to alert rival family members of your sinister intent or reveal your weapons to distress business owners in order to pressure them into paying you for "protection". The target locking and shooting is another good aspect of the game as it helps alot in 3rd person shooters because otherwise it can be very difficult to hit an enemy due to camer angles. This game does allow free aiming to take place though and when you do it lets you make some really good shots.
With regards to the weapons in game there is quite alot of choice. You player can carry about 10 different weapons and you have choices of; baseball bats, lead pipes, pistol, Snub nose revolver, magnum, Shotgun, Tommy gun, Molatov Cocktails, Garrote Wire and of course you fists. All are very hand in different situations however sometimes there's affect on your victim is not always particularly realistic, because as far as I was aware being shot with a shotgun from about 5 metres away would make a person do a little bit more that just bend over winded!
Another bonus for the combat aspect of the game is the ability to perform "executions" on enemies. This is a process of where you use a certain part of the scenery (like a bridge or funeral parlour oven) to kill a target, or just by using you gun in a way that is deemed extra special. These "executions" are a form of unlock, and during the game your bound to come across them by accident or through a mission which requires it. For example on a few occasions if an enemy is really close to you you can hit the execute key and you shove them to the floor, kick them on their pack and then shoot them in the face, earning you the "scar face" exacution style. You can also throw people through windows to earn "stained glass" execution style. A very ....gruesome yet seemingly addictive aspect of the game.
It is at this point I feel that I should possibley warn parents who are thinking of buying this game for younger children to maybe hesitate and reconsider, as it is clearly designed for 18+
The driving part of the game is a bit of a downside if you ask me. Not because of the car controlability but because of the cars themselves. There are only about 5 different models of car to choose from, they are pretty generic looking with regards to the graphic models, and there is no way of storing them for future use. Compared to Mafia, the 2002 gangster game, which boasted 10s of cars each with very indetifiable features, and each with its own specifications which were stored in a notebook which you could look through, it was quite a disappointment. Especially considering the technological advances which can occur in 4 years!
Once you do complete all the storyline missions (and during) you also have to option to acquire businesses and rackets as I have mentioned earlier. You do this by entering a rival family owned business and beating up, threatening and generally jsut roughing up the owner until they give in. You then get a weekly amount of money payed to you and subsequently to the Corleone family. As well as all these normal businesses there are also the larger hubs and wareshouses which you can take over. These are alot harder to do are there are many more rival family members guarding them and waiting to kill you if you try to steal their turf! Also you have to try and explore the map to find hidden film reals which will unlock actual movie clips which you can view from the main menu. Something I really enjoy as its great to see all the classic bits from the films.
With regards to the design of your own individual character, I was pleased and dissapointed with different aspects of it. I thought it was good that you can specifically alter theire appearance, from the way they frown and smile to whether they are fat or thin, but during the game when you make money and what to improve their attire, the only way you can do this is exiting the game, going to the menu and editing the profile of you saved game's character. It would much better if you could go into a clothes store, in game, and purchase and dress you charafter in new clothes, like in the GTA series of games.
Another great aspect of the game is that as you progress through the game and earn respect for taking over rackets, killing rival gangsters and robbing banks, you rank up and with each rank you are given ability points which you can use to improve you players fighting ability, shooting ability, street smarts and speed. Also you are given progress reports in the pause screen from "Tom" the Corleone Consiglieri (Robert Duvall's character fromn the films) which highlight how much of the game you ahve completed, how much the other gangs hate you and how business is doing.
Another good aspect of the gameplay is the vendetta and police system. What this is is when you commit crimes etc the police begin to hunt you down and the more/worse crimes you do the more/better trained police that come after you. However you are able to bribe police chiefs in order to let them look the other way for a certain period of time. Good old corruptable police!!! The vendetta system is how much you are hated by the other Mafia families who are also fighting for control of New York. This increases when you take over rvial family businesses and kill rival family members. If you get a vendetta level of 1000 from one of the families, you start a mob war, which can only be settled by blowing up the rival family's compound or buy paying off an FBI agent to start putting pressure on the family in question. Many a time have I started mob wars and had all the members of that gang start shooting at my car as I drive past one of their bakers of nightclubs!
~~~~~Graphics~~~~~ This was a real disappoint for me, as I was really looking forward to a well designed EA masterpiece. Instead I got 5 different types of car, each with matt black windows and arcade style damage affects. Mafia, the gangster game of 4 years previously, boasted 30+ vehicles with see through windows, and realistic damage affects. THAT WAS 4 YEARS AGO!!!! So yeah a big thumbs down to that side of the game.
Also with regards to the buildings and scenery, the designer obviosly jsut designed one building of each type (ie: one warehouse blueprint, one small shop blueprint, one hotel blueprint and one restaurant blueprint) and then copied and pasted them all over the map and gave them difference coloured curtains and hoped we would reaslise they have fobbed us off with a shoddy attempt at a versatile environment.
However all that said they did do a fabulous job on recreating the faces and bodies of the characters from the films. Nearly all the family members (Vito, Tom, Sonny, etc.) looked identical to their big screen personas. James Caan, who played Sonny even worked with EA and did the voice overs for his character's role in the game. The only one who was a bit disappointing was Al Pacino's Michael Corleone, I imagine this was only because he wouldn't sign a contract saying they could use his face or some other bureacratic nonsense! Was really chuffed to see all these lifelike characters in the game as they really added something to the cut scenes and game's overall aura.
~~~~~Sounds/Music~~~~~ If you ahve seen the film you will undoubtedly know how brilliant the soundtrack was. And similaraly with this game as they have used alot of the music from the film to backdrop you foray into the world of organised crimes. So many times have I come out of my room after playing the game whistling the famouse Godfather theme!
The in game sounds are fine too. Pretty standard as far as games go but then how can you really improve on a gun sound, engine sound etc.!
~~~~~Requirements~~~~~ In order to run the game you'll need Winodws 2000/XP, 1.4GHz processor, 256 MB RAM, 5GB space on your Hard drive, a 2 Speed DVD-ROM drive, a 64mb video card, DirectX 9.0c compatible sound card and subsequently DirectX 9.0c, and a keyboard and mouse. If you have one, you can also use a USB Gamepad to play this game.
As far as game requirements go these are on the lower side of average, with only the hard drive space requirement being higher than most other games (and I believe that is down to the fact that you have to save film clips during the game, which would take up a bit of room) Most standard out fo the factory computers will have more than sufficient components to play this game and so I wouldn't worry about not having the "power" to play this game.
~~~~~Conclusion~~~~~ Overall it is a very enjoyable game and although (according to Tom's report) I have only played for around 24 hours or so and have completed the storyline missions, I still have alot more of the game to complete and so Its continuity is quite good, as I really want to earn the ultimate title of Don of New York. It boasts a great film basis and a fun style of gameplay with a brilliant soundtrack and fun extras.
Its a bargain too at £25 from most high street shops and I think you can pick it up off the internet for under £20 now!
Advantages: Amazing graphics, follows the film, non-linear gameplay Disadvantages: None
The Godfather is simply a fantastic game. Unlike most other film adaptions, this is high quality. In the game, you play a minor character who is present at all the focal points of the film, i.e. the assassination of Don Corelone, the killing of Sollazzo, the meeting of Michael etc. This means that fans of the film get to feel as if they are part of the whole experience, and it helps to move the game along quite fluidly. Another neat aspect is not ... ...the exception of Al Pacino who plays Michael, but the characters are the exact replica of the characters, so Robert Duvall makes an apperance as Tom Hagan for example. The voice acting is not only limited to cutscenes designed to move the story along, but also when you speak to the characters. The gameplay is very much like GTA with your character driving around the city of New York killing enemy gang members, picking up weapons and extorting businesses. ...
I accidentally purchased this game the other day, while having what the girls at work might describe as a ?blonde moment?. I had been listening to a (p)review of a game on PC Gamer Podcast ( uk ). They gave it rave reviews and went on and on about the best features and how this sequel was going to blow the first game out of the water. Trouble is, they were talking about Mafia 2, but for some reason I thought they?d said Godfather 2. Id played Mafia and thought it was pants but on their review I was excited by Mafia 2. This transferred over onto Godfather 2. By a stroke of luck though, it is actually quite a good game! Which is nice. Yes, it?s another GTA clone, but there are quite a few elements in it which I think give it an edge over most other GTA clones. There are some downsides though too, but ill start this review off by saying ...
Yet another purchase from Game - this time I actually paid £22.99 for Mafia a few weeks after reading a review of the new Godfather game to be released for the X-Box 360. Being a big fan of the Gangsters PC game I decided it was time to fall back to my Italian roots, take the oath and extort some cash from the poor citizens of Chicago. Lets roll!!
The basic plot to the game is that you are a poor old taxi driver, cornered into helping two mafia guys escape a hit - following the completion of this first mission you are drawn deeper and deeper into their seedy underworld. Sounds great so far!
First impressions are that the game could have been so much more! The missions of which there are 10 seem very similar all the way through. 5 of them involve driving your taxi at high speed to either escape the police, a rival firm or to deliver ...
No prizes for guessing what this game is about...its about gangsters. Its like a computer game version of the Godfather basically.
Anyway, I was given this game by an unfortunate soul who's computer wasn't good enough for it. I've never played a game like this in depth before, but I do know that its very similar to Grand Theft Auto 3 in its style. Its an action game with a few kinda puzzly bits and a lot of car driving.
The story is set in 1930's America...where rival gangs battle for the illegal alcohol trade. Tommy Angelo used to be a cab driver, but one night got caught up in a gangster chase and ended up as a respected mafioso.
The storyline of the game is far better than the GTA 3 storyline, and it is brought to life well with movie like cutscenes. There are some great characters like the Don Salieri, mafia boss, Paulie ...
Manufacturer's product description
On the face of it The Godfather isn't an obvious movie to be made into a video game, what with it being more than thirty years old and staring a lot of middle age men in hats. On the other hand it is incredibly violent; and morally ambiguous enough to make an excellent period version of Grand Theft Auto...which is exactly what this appears to be.Although lots of missions from and inspired by the movie are promised you actually play a completely new character and control them over a period of ten years, between 1945 and 1955. During this time you get to take part in all manner of mobster type activities including managing protection rackets, assassination missions and full blown gang wars against the five different mob families in the game.Despite all the big name stars lending their voices and faces to the game it's actually New York that seems to be the main star with a highly impressive, if somewhat sparsely populated, virtual city. The graphics are excellent, although it remains to be seen just how much variety there is to the missions, considering the game can't really go to some of the more surreal excess of Grand Theft Auto. So even if this isn't quite an offer you can't refuse, it's at least looking like one to be taken very seriously. --Harrison DentThis preview is based on an incomplete version of the game; features or problems mentioned above may not appear in the finished game. Gamers will create their own mob character in the game, putting themselves into the action while reliving classic moments from the fiction and experiencing original missions alongside memorable characters from the film. After a life of small-time jobs and petty thefts the player will be accepted into the Corleone family, America's most famous criminal organization. It will be up to the player to carry out orders, earn respect and make New York City their own.
