Advantages: Engaging, informative, un-assuming and clear. Disadvantages: None.
I recently embarked upon an Open University (OU) Degree. 'Discovering Science' is my first course. When the OU send out the materials, they enclose a list of set books for your course. 'The sciences goodstudyguide' is the book recommended for my particular course.
The book is written by: Andrew Northedge, Jeff Thomas, Andrew Lane and Alice Peasgood. It is published by: The Open University.
The book is generally for anybody studying mathematics, sciences and technology (including engineering). However, it was written in the first instance for people studying either, S103 Discovering Science or S280 Science Matters: with the Open University. Its premise is to improve study skills, in those subjects.

Advantages: Lots of information, extremely clear and helpful Disadvantages: Over-explains and doesn't motivate or inspire
The Mature Student?s StudyGuide is straightforward and does exactly what it says on the tin: it?s designed to help people returning to education ? whether it?s after a gap of 5 years or 50. The advice is fairy basic, but covers everything: the idea is to use the StudyGuide as a starting point before referring to other books to tackle any problem areas. It is designed for both attending a college or university and distance learning, although the content applies more to degree courses.
The first chapters are only mildly helpful. They are: ?Learning How To Learn?, ?Preparing for Study?, ?Organizing Your Study?, ?Enhancing Your Reading Skills?, ?Enhancing Your Writing Skills? and ?Enhancing Your Mathematical and Scientific Skills?. I suspect that they would be more useful to someone returning to education after a longer time or to ...
