"We were the Mulvaneys, remember us?"

Advantages: Well written
Disadvantages: A bit too long, and flowery

WE WERE THE MULVANEYS By JOYCE CAROL OATES Joyce Carol Oates was born on June 16, 1938) in New York. She is an award winning writer and very popular in her native America, she has written some very contraversial books including 'Black Water', a story based on the Kennedy-Chappaquiddick scandal. Her 26th book 'We Were the Mulvaneys' was written in 1996. In 2002 the book was adapted into a TV film starring Beau Bridges and Blythe Danner. 'We Were the Mulvaneys' is an emotional family chronicle that follows nearly forty years of triumphs and tragedies of the Mulvaney family. Michael and Corrine Mulvaney have the perfect family. They have four wonderful, perfect children Michael, Patrick, Judd, and Marianne - including a recently graduated high school football star, a vastly intellectual science student ...

Review of We Were the Mulvaneys - Joyce Carol Oates

An unreliable tale of the murder of 6 year old Bliss Rampike...

Advantages: the basic story is compelling as it relates closely to that of a real case
Disadvantages: unreliable narrator, writing is confusing, too many footnotes, long-winded in places

On 29th January 1997, six-year-old Bliss Rampike is found murdered inside her family home. Bliss's tragic story is of interest to the media and public as Bliss was a rising star in ice-skating circles. Skyler Rampike, Bliss' older brother, tells his side of the story In this book; how Bliss' fame came to be, what the Rampike family household was like and why he was accused of her murder. The question is, can we rely on his version of events? Joyce Carol Oates' story of Bliss Rampike is supposed to be a fictional tale, although most people who read this story are told that it could be almost identical to the circumstances of the real life murder of little beauty queen, JonBenet Ramsey who at six years old also, was found dead in her parents home just hours after she was reported missing. In fact, when looking at the facts ...

Review of My Sister, My Love - Joyce Carol Oates

With Or Without You - Carole Matthews

Advantages: Amazing story, paints a great picture, believable characters!
Disadvantages: None!!!!!!

WITH OR WITHOUT YOU CAROLE MATHEWS Carole Matthews is one of my favourite authors. Since reading a couple of her books; A compromising position, and A whiff of scandal, I have really got into her writing. This is the most recent of all her books which I have read and I am looking forward to reading many more. Her books remind me of Belinda Jones work (I love Capri, Diva Las Vegas, The Love Acadamy), whose books I also love. Plot: When Jake tells Lyssa their 4 year relationship is over, she is devastated. Their relationship has been though and stressful recently with the IVF tretment but what had she doen to deserve this? Lyssa soon discovers Jakes real reason for the break up in the form of Everest climbing Neeve, his co-worker. Lyssa is determined to get him back but with everyone telling her she is ...
