The greatest show off Earth was the first Robert Rankin book I ever read and now he's my favourite author.
I'll give you a basic idea of what the book's about but I'll try not to give too much away!
There are two main characters, Raymond and Simon. Raymond is your average beer drinking 23 year old who loves life and tries to make everybody happy. One day he gets abducted by a flying starfish from Uranus and gets sold as food on the venusian market! He gets rescued by a flying circus, meets the girl of his dreams and gets told he's to save the world from a strange race who live above us although we can't see them!!!
While all of this is going on, Simon is still on Earth. He's a bit of a lad and will sleep with anybody (which makes his girlfriend angry) but that's the least of his worries because he too has to save the world from a demonic half-man half-chicken (sate-hen) and he finds a book written in the future to help him. He has also been accused of killing Raymond. (It's hardly surprising that nobody believes Raymond was abducted by a flying starfish!)
If you'd like to know what happens to Raymond and Simon you can buy the greatest show off earth for £4.99 from most good book shops ( I got mine for £1 in the works)
The cover of the book was illustrated by Ian Murray and it shows Raymond and his girlfriend on a Harley Davidson plus the Sinister looking family who bought him to eat!
The only other thing I can say is that this might seem like a pretty silly book but it is definately not for children as it involves material of a sexual and violent nature (and lots of it!) Rankin also says in other books of his that you shouldn't read certain parts if you suffer from night terrors (and after reading some of his other work I can see why!)
I hope this is more useful than it used to be but if not could you let me know so I can make it better. Thanx again for the read, Gemma.
