I am a genuine King fan, and although I do not claim to have read every last thing his has written, when a new book comes out I am usually eager to read it. This book definitely did not disappoint. Telling a tale of life in a prison isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, especially when it is based on death row. But King’s exquisite ability to thrust the reader into the dark realms of each character is, alone, an excellent reason to read this book. The story is told by way of the first warden, who is an amicable man and one who try’s not to judge people (difficult considering the line of work he is in). I don’t want to give the story away, but King touches on many emotions and keeps the readers thinking ‘he did’,…..’no he didn’t?’….Yes, he did!’. The book is a masterpiece and although I have not yet seen the film I have been told that it, too, is excellent.
