I am amazed that Stephen King's works seem to get better and better unlike many other authors that have been around for so long. With The Green Mile now being my favourite(with IT very close behind!)I cannot wait for his next masterpiece.
I watched the film before I read the book and after reading the book am impressed with how close the film and book really are. All throughout the book as I read the pages, I could hear Tom Hanks saying the words to me as he did an excellent portrayal of Paul. Paul is a prison guard on death row in the 1930's. It is written based in the present with Paul writing a diary and going back to this most memorable time.
The book is well written as all Stephen King's novels are. The characters are all excellent and you will find yourself loving some and hating others. There are twists and turns that you will not expect, and maybe not enjoy. It is definately one that you cannot put down until the end, it comes in six small books rather than one big one.You get to know each character very well and know all their strengthes and weaknesses.
Del is a french-canadian man on death row for rape and murder, his only joy is a small mouse called Mr Jingles. The mouse is a very excellent extra to the book and his story too is full of surprises. Del's end is a very sad one indeed thanks to a prison officer called Percy. He is a character you will definately dislike i am sure.
Another character that really sticks in my mind is John Coffey (like the drink, only spelt different). He is a seven foot black man who from the size of him is quite scary but as the book goes on, you find that there is no way you can dislike or even hate this man.
This book comes packed full of laughter, surprises and even tears and is a definate must read.
A fine review on a fine book that was made into a fine film. S x

I read this as a serial novel when it first came out. It had me gripped from the opening chapter to the closing paragraph. As in so many cases, the film was great, but the book was so much better !
