The Green Mile, a Serial Novel by Stephen King. The book comes in six parts, and it was decided the book should be one volume.
I recommend you watch the Oscar Winning Film as well, Starring Tom Hanks, it is excellent, however lets talk about the book.
Part 1 - The Two Dead Girls!
This explosive start to the book addresses the main issue. What you look at is the murder of the two Detterick twins. One night they decide to sleep outside, their mother gives in after their consistent persuasion. The next morning they are no-where to be seen, causing alarm bells to ring around the Detterick Farm.
A massive search party is set up and local land scoured to find them. Blood stained Cloth is re-covered from trees, an indication that they were in distress. Miles away from Detterick Farm, a man is heard to be screaming. Of course everyone approaches him, the large Negro has one twin in each hand. He is crying his eyes out, and shouts, "I tried to take it back, but it was too late' and John Coffey is arrested for the rape and murder of the Detterick Twins, and sentenced to death. When he arrives at Cold Mountain he says, my name is John Coffey like the drink only spelt different!
Part 2 – The Mouse on the Mile!
This part of the book concentrates on the influence of Mr Jingles, the mouse of Del. It tells how Mr Jingles would come out from under
the restraint room, and make his way over to the duty desk. Mr Jingles was a very clever mouse, he knew who to trust and who not to trust. He trusted that of Paul Edgecombe anyway, and never liked the smell of Percy Wetmore, the prisoner guard with the aunt high up.
Mr Jingles would appear and the prison guards would feed him little bits of cheese and cracker. His intelligence showed when he never took food from a stranger, the intelligent mouse, oh could he be a circus mouse?
Part 3 – Coffey’s Hands!
Paul Edgecombe has the worst Urinary infection of his life, he did not want to go to the doctor as he felt that the pills subscribed would make him feel sick. The pain was evident as he described trying to urinate, and the pain it was causing him.
At work one day, Coffey called him over to his cell. He walked over and Coffey grabbed his groin. Coffey seemed to suck out the infection, and released flie like creatures. His Infection had gone and a miracle has just occurred.
This is really what this part of the novel is about, Coffey’s hands like.
Part 4 – The bad death of Eduard Delacroix!
Percy Wetmore was hated on the mile, by everyone. He said if he was allowed to be out front at an execution he would place in a transfer. It was therefore agreed, and for the execution of del, he would be out front,
The time came and he was following all the procedures. However, for the revenge of having a pet mouse which he hated, Mr Jingles he did one terrible thing. Under the cap you wear, you are meant to soak the sponge in brine, Percy did not and nobody noticed. This mean the current was not going directly to Dels brain and meant the worst execution you could ever imagine. Mr Jingles ran off scared during this escapade.
Part 5 – Night Journey!
This part of the book describes how the prison guards, let Coffey out to go and use his miracle hands on Melinda Moores, the wardens wife who had a large tumor in her brain and never had long to live. They believed that Coffey could suck out the tumor, like Paul’s infection and how he had brought Mr Jingles back to life, after Percy crushed him.
They devised a plan, Percy was going in the restraint room to think about what he had done to Del and Wild Bill, was given sedatives.
They left the prison, went to the warden house and with struggle, Coffey got to Melinda. He healed her, everyone was amazed, John Coffey Miracle Man had struck once again. Do you think he had been trying to bring the Detterick twins back from the dead. You’d be right, it was Wild Bill in the end.
Anyway, they got back to the prison and Coffey has not coughed up his flies. Everyone thought he would die in a few days. However, as Percy left the restraint room Coffey grabbed him and put the flies into him. Percy walked over to Bill’s cell and shot him dead. Percy had lost his memory and he had been punished by Coffey for his influence of Del’s death and Bill had been killed as he was evil.
However, Coffey’s innocence could not be proved on what was really circumstantial evidence.
Part 6 – Coffey on the Mile!
This emphasizes how bad it was for all the guards to have to execute John Coffey. He was not only an innocent man, but also one of gods miracle men and they had a duty to kill him, but they all knew he was innocent. John Coffey showed Paul with the power of his hand, how William Wharton had been a painter at Detterick farm and heard how the girls were sometimes allowed to sleep out late. Also, how a few months’ later he came back and he raped and then killed them. Paul Edgecombe was horrified but never had it in his heart to tell the other guards, as the execution was going to be bad as it is.
After the execution, they left. It had been un-bearable!!!
Right, so this sorry is really spectacular and I might add to this later. It is in first person narration, Paul Edgecombe being the narrator. He is writing this account down, and shares it with a friend at his nursing home. More secrets lie in the book, and to find them out you will have to read it!!!
Also, for anyone who doesn’t know, the film and book both have a different ending!
