I saw this book in water stones knowing that the film was meant to be brilliant. So I brought it.
This book is about a old man telling the story of when he used to work on the death row of cold mountain prison. It is set during the great depression
Normally if you were on death row you were on the last mile. But in this book the floor of the last mile was faded pear colour so it was called the green mile(hence the name.)The electric chair was in use at the time. Like all things if your scared of it you give it a nickname. The electric chair became known by the inmates and the prison guards as old sparky.
One day to the prison came a massive black man. Sentenced to die for the murder and rape of two little girls. But after spending a few days with him the prison guards start to notice something strange about him. Then one day he healed one of the prison guards. This is when they all realised he was innocent. The fight began to try and save his life.
Through out the story you learn stuff about prisons at the time. You read about the executions of other people and how they can go wrong. You also learn about how the prisoners were treated and what the criminal justice system was like. You learn from this book as well as enjoy it.
The book is quite a thick one, however this doesn't matter because if you find it as addictive as i did you will not want to but it down.
This story is one of Stephan kings most gripping page turners. Once you have picked it up it is impossible to put it back down. Its if the book is glued to your hand!
This is a great book which you can read again and agian and still enjoy it. If i could advise you on any thing it would be to read the book before you watch the film. Although the film does have a slightly different ending to the book it is still great.
This book should really be brought right away
