I first read The Green Mile a few years ago, when the partwork came out, and was eager to go to the shop for the next part. It starts off with an elderly gentleman who seems to be writing his memoirs, and turns into the most gripping will they/wont they story I have read for a long time.
The gentleman, Paul Edgecombe, is the boss of E-Block, in Cold Mountain Prison. E-Block is death row for them. It centres around a particular man, John Coffey, and his amazing story of life. He is found with two little blonde girls dead in his arms, and charged with their murder. He goes to Cold Mountain Prison, and to death row, called the Green Mile, on account of how the linoleum is the colour of faded limes.
There are a few characters in this story. Paul Edgecombe, known as Boss Edgecombe. He is married to Jan. Brutus Howell, known as Brutal, because of his size, but he is a good guy. He is another guard, and a real friend to Paul. Dean Stanton and Harry Terwilliger are another pair of guards, who are often on the mile. There is also the electric chair, which they call Old Sparky.
There is one particular guard, Percy Wetmore, and they all hate him, but he is the nephew of someone in the government, so they cant touch him, they just have to put up with him. He is the one who brings John Coffey onto the mile, calling out Dead Man Walking, and the others are disgusted with him. There are a few inmates, The Chief, Arlen Bitterbuck, an indian. Then there is Eduard Delacroix, whom they call Del for short. They are already in when John Coffey comes onto the mile. After John comes another bad egg, William Wharton, called Billy The Kid, but they like to wind him up and call him Wild Bill. He causes trouble from the moment he sets foot on the mile.
Another important character is Mr. Jingles. He is a mouse that comes onto the mile, and is befriended by Del, who looks after him. He colours a cotton reel, and gets Mr. Jingles to chase after it. There are numerous things that happen on the mile. I felt when I was reading it that the characters were so real. I cried at numerous parts of the book.
It comes in six partworks, and also as a whole book ( thank heaven for that ) They are as follows. The Two Dead Girls. The Mouse On The Mile. Coffeys Hands. The Bad Death Of Eduard Delacroix. Night Journey. Coffey On The Mile.
I was so engrossed in the book, I dare not put it down until I had finished it, then I couldnt wait to rush out to the shops and buy the next part. The story is set in 1932, and is an excellent read. If I tell you any more of the story, you wont buy it, so you will have to buy it and find out what happens to all the characters.
There is also a movie, and that is extremely good too, but the book is by far better, more descriptive, and gives your imagination the chance to roam. Thanks for reading this, ciao for now, Aussieme1106 xx
